Like a few other fellows this spring, I find my perfectly running tractor has become a no runner. Fits and spurts a few days ago, made me think the heavy rain and fog and hail had gotten to wires or distributor. A day later: perfect for a bit, then back to erratic poor running. Then smooth as a kitten, then spits, spurts, low running...Now: dead. Exchanged the 15 year old coil with the older original one but that didn't help.
How do I check the coil to know if it needs replacing? Before I go on to exchanging points and condenser.... Other thoughts?

Re: Testing coil?
Have you checked fuel flow? Maybe some "trash":
At the tank outlet
Fuel sediment bowl
Carb inlet screen
Main jet
??
Good luck!

Re: Testing coil?
Using the coil test Greg cited will tell you if there is an obvious fault in the coil. But, coils can test out on the bench and still be faulty.
Problem description would indicate a faulty coil. Before changing out the coil conduct more tests starting at the points.

I have an excuse. CRS.

Really a nice site! Thanks. Looks to me that I should/will print out those drawings and keep them in my collection of papers.
Will also say: Thanks for other comments. I'll check things out today and take it from there.

Re: Testing coil?
First thing I did was empty the fuel bowl. Next was to reset the points and at that it started and ran briefly then quit. Repeated attempts to start resulted in fuel dripping from carb so fuel was getting to it okay. Next was the take out the old condenser and put in an even older one, and that did the trick. That little condenser! Running happily.
