What Is It They Say About "When You Asume"?

Postby ricky racer » Sun Jun 05, 2016 8:05 pm

After getting a nice tachometer recently, I was excited to get it cleaned up and ready to mount on my Cub. I removed the tach drive and made a cover for the donor tractor, cleaned up all the parts and put them in a ziplock baggy. Eventually I sand blasted the tachometer mounting bracket painted it and even mounted it on my Cub. It looks real nice. My wife asked me what I wanted for Father's Day and I told her a new tach drive cable. She said that I'd have to order it and I just haven't gotten it done yet. Anyway, tonight I'm putting my Cub away after a nice ride back to the woods and thought about the tach drive and possibly mounting it up next week. To my amazement, there is no provision for the tach drive in the distributor drive housing!! Bummer, I assumed all of the non-magneto Cub motors had the flange to mount the tach drive. Time to regroup and come up another plan......

Ricky, That's an easy fix. You just need to find another distributor. :D

Hi Ricky,

I guess you are trying to put the tachometer on your 1953 Cub, they changed the Battery Ignition Unit casting at Cub serial number 192113, which was late 1955, and made the hole for the tach drive. All the Battery Ignition Units before that had no hole, the shape of the casting is different where the hole would be.
You can change the 2 Battery Ignition Units between the tractors if you want, is the lowest priced way. I'm not sure if you can use the same distributor and just switch the 2 drive castings, maybe.
Did you try turning the thing that sticks out the rear of the tach where the cable goes in, and see if the hand moves, nice to know if the tach still works before you put it on a tractor. :)

Stan

That should work, never thought about Steiner, just JP Tractor. Also Steiner is fairly close to Niles.

That part was common across a bunch of different IH models with 4 cylinders.

Yeah, that part from Steiner would work. You could also swap the part with your donor tractor. If the donor is another Cub, you could swap the entire battery ignition unit. If a different model, the advance curves would probably be different.

I guess the next obvious question is, once I get the correct housing will I need anything more to drive the tach drive?

I assume you have the little "gear" and plate that bolts it into the housing?

Hi,
Here are pics from a Cub owners manual showing the tach and cable routing, and drive.
There are 2 clips originally that hold the drive cable in place.
In the pic of the dash, there is a clip holding the cable on the hood screw, the forward screw, it is hard to see in the pic. You can make them from some sheet metal if you want.
The parts book page is the last one below. Clip number 8 is no longer shown in their pic, just in the list of parts below on the page.
I took a picture of mine showing where it goes. :)
