A Number of Questions

Postby TheBeekeeper » Sat Sep 03, 2005 9:37 pm

First of all I would like to thank everyone for their assistance with my carb issue. Lurker Carl's writeup was particularly helpful. Of course I had already bought the non-Case rebuild kit prior to reading it, but to my surprise I think they did fix the oversized gasket issue as mine fit almost perfectly.

Well after the carb rebuild the governor needed adjusted as it was not kicking in at all. I followed the steps in the maintenance manual but I have a couple of concerns. First of all, in some cases after I have been mowing a while and the governor has kicked in a few times the throttle control becomes useless and it seems to get stuck at mid-level RPMs. I have found that the control rod going back to the carb will not move even by hand as it seems the governor has it locked in some fashion. The only way I have been able to do anything is to hit the kill switch and start it up again.

Speaking of starting it up again, I also seem to have some difficulty starting it after I have it running for about 30 minutes or so. This is especially so if it has stalled for some reason, like me mowing too much grass. The tractor is not overheating at all, but it just won't start. Any ideas would be appreciated. :D

Beekeeper, first thing I would check is the linkage. See if it is binding somewhere. If not, you may need to remove and check / clean the governor.

The hard starts when hot are likely due to a failing coil.

If you can't fix it with a hammer, you've got an electrical problem.

After checking the linkages... lubricating and all as BD suggested, and the problem still persists, it is time for a rebuild on the governor.

A complete rebuild kit will probably come to around $100.00US. I rebuilt Jethro's governor at CubFest Northeast 2004 thanks to Lurker Carl and Jan van Oostrom for aroudn $150.00 Cdn at that time. I think the exchange was a tad worse than it is now...

Next time the engine stalls out after the engine has warmed up, check to see if you have spark at the plugs. Typical indication of a failing coil.

Could be several other problems, check out the ignition first.
