Governor problem?
My '66 loboy with 59" woods mower deck starts sputtering when I get into a little thick bahiagrass, grass that my JD L110 42' riding mower has no problem cutting. Also, my throttle control has no range - in other words, it' either idle or wide open. Does this mean a governor rebuild is needed?

Re: Governor problem?
I'm going thru the same thing. I have the cover off the Governor and everything looks good. The shaft doesn't have play where it goes in the governor. The spring looks good to me. The linkage has been oiled and no binding and still does the same thing as yours. Let me know what you fined.

Re: Governor problem?
The clevis rod might need adjustment where the governor rockshaft connects to the carburetor

Re: Governor problem?
There's a lot of difference between cutting 42 inches and 59 inches of width. Couple that with the fact that the Cub is turning max 1800 engine rpm at about 10 hp whereas the JD rider engine is probably turning about 2 times the rpm, not sure about the hp. That being said, you're not getting a lot of increased blade speed from the 59 inch mower unless you have significantly changed the sheave ratio. It's almost like trying to compare apples to oranges, they are both citrus fruits and grow on trees but that's about all they have in common. JMHO. Stan

Re: Governor problem?
I agree you, Stan, apples and oranges. Riding mower is 17 hp and 42 in cut, but the grass wasn't that long and the cub should have have handled it easily. The fact that I can go through the whole range in the throttle control without a change in engine speed tells me something is wrong. I've never worked on this tractor, bought it and put it to work, but problems are coming up. May need to look at the governor, and whatever else anyone recommends.

Re: Governor problem?
Hi,
Here is a page from the Cub parts book. Mike is talking about the amount rod number 1 screws into clevis number 2. It has to be set right, or the throttle lever operation will be affected.
I have tried adjusting mine and that is what it did. Not sure if they made every rod the same length, but on mine the rod has to stick through the clevis threads 3/16 - 1/4 inch. That is a place to start anyway, if yours is out of adjustment, or somebody has changed it in the past, and it doesn't work right. My opinion.
There is an adjustment procedure in the service manual.

Re: Governor problem?
You are absolutely right. (If I had just let it alone when I first posted instead of trying to be absolutely clear by going back and adding "citrus".) I can only plead CRIS, but I think everyone probably got the point. As far as the performance of the Cub, a complete tune up to include checking the timing and the valve tappet clearance might improve the performance. Re: Governor problem?
Hey guys, never got to get in the shop, the kids came over and asked "you're not barbecuing?" I barbecued. Thanks for the suggestions. Been awhile since I worked on cub adjustments, so a few questions may be forthcoming.
