Cub Crankshaft Gear

Postby Bill E Bob » Mon May 23, 2016 5:00 pm

Without getting into the timing issues--Can the crankshaft gear be reversed? Reason: Chipped tooth on front face of gear that would not matter if gear was reversed on crankshaft. (If not, see wanted in the Vine).

I think yes, but I don't have a loose one to look at and be sure.

Upon further examination and testing, the crank gear could be reversed provided an identical chamfer is machined into the back side of the gear. With that in mind I will be searching for a replacement.

FWIW Serious testing and measuring precludes reversing the crank gear due to the helical cut gear teeth. Reversing the gear and aligning it with the cam/idler gears leaves the keyway for the crank gear a few degrees from where it should be, interfering with proper timing. (Live and Learn)

I thought about that after my reply, but still didn't have one to confirm whether the keyway was centered to the helix or not. Thanks!
