What's this Disk Missing?

Postby Brandon Webb » Mon Apr 25, 2016 2:32 pm

Found this disk locally for sale. Not familiar with the lift disk I believe it's a model 28. When I look at the manuals on the server they show a metal strap type lift not chains. My manuals at home show a totally different mount setup. Guess my question is what is it and what's it missing?

that is a 38 disc, early version of the f38 fast hitch, needs another bracket that looks like a big "V" that bolts it to the drawbar, drawbar is installed facing forward

Also appears to be missing the lift bracket that bolts to the rear rockshaft.
That tongue is pretty bent as well...

That's What my manual showed a big triangle shaped piece that went in where a substitute drawbar went. I did not know they made a non fast hitch L38. Wonder if I could make the missing part? I could straighten the drawbar I have a big press. Seller is asking $250. Thanks

It is common sense to take a method and try it. If it fails, admit it frankly and try another. But above all, try something.

Hi,
Here is the page Bill posted above, the right half of the pic, where the lift is, doesn't show on my computer. The whole manual is below that. It has several models of L38 disc in it. :)

I own one of these and like it better then my 23a in some ways. I have a drawbar dedicated to just it so hookup is a breeze. I am missing the lift bracket too.

That "tongue" is a swinging drawbar. $250 is a little high for anything that is not complete but I am out of touch on current pricing. Check the discs and spindles. My 23A had "spools" (like two spools glued together end to end) that were worn to the point where the center raised rib would have been a good pizza cutter. I was able to find what I needed as all the old IH stuff used a lot of common parts. They take a lot of tubes of grease and some people just skimp.

You will need a couple of sets of wheel weights up front. I found it very tail-heavy. I had one for a short time. I found the 23A to be a lot more effective because of the ability to angle the second gang and then straighten it out for the finish passes. The 38 was a lot easier to use in tight spots where you don't have a lot of room to turn- but a swinging drawbar is a big help on the 23A. The 38 is a lot easier to park for the season, especially if you keep your implements in the barn. I leave my 23A out all season. One of these years I will get together a wood platform for it.
