Farmall cub propane
Hi, my name is Josh. I purchased a 1958 farmall cub a couple of months ago ! I purchased a 1975 cub a couple of weeks ago , as I've been restoring the 1975 cub , I start on the 1958 cub and notice that this cub runs off propane, it has a water housing between the hose of the radiator and the head ! On the water housing is a zenith vaporizer ! The housing looks like it was made for this head , I can't find anything on the propane on the Internet. It has a century propane carbourator, a zenith regulator and 2 other things that I don't know the names of! I need every piece of help I can get to figuring this cub out! The cub was running of this propane system ! I will upload photos

WELCOME
Always nice to see new members. A cub on propane shouldn't be to difficult. Someone familiar with the setups here can probably help you. Lots of things run on propane and it is a pretty clean running fuel. Been around a few propane burners (fork lifts - JLG's) and lots of parts get used.
ps: old 2010 article here about propane Cub

Try a Google search with just the part number. Surprising how often that will turn up what you are looking for.

Re: Farmall cub propane
I haven't gotten around to posting a question on exactly this topic. I will be getting a loader Cub that I plan to use in the horse barn and in the rose garden among other places. These are two sort-of confined spaces, and are both places where it will be in use while my wife is present. She has bad respiratory allergies and asthma and is sensitive to odors in general. She loves the Cubs, but generally can't tolerate being too close by when they are working, because the exhaust really exacerbates her respiratory issues.
I would love to convert the loader Cub to dual-fuel. Use propane for close quarters, and switch to gas for use outside.
I am assuming you want to keep your setup, but if you could post pictures, part numbers and any other information you can find about this, that would be great! It would be nice not to have to reengineer the system and to put it together with period parts would be even better!
Great find!

Re: Farmall cub propane
I found a pretty good article going into the nuts and bolts of propane and natural gas conversions:
http://www.enginebuildermag.com/2015/05 ... ne-builds/
The only thing I've heard about propane engines is they don't like cold weather because the gas pressure drops off and you have fuel supply issues, hence why the vaporizer is used. They also don't put out as much power due to the lower energy density in natural gas and propane, so to get the most out of your cub, you need to increase the compression ratio.

Re: Farmall cub propane
Dual fuel ability would give me the best of both worlds, at least in theory.
Working in close quarters under propane, I'm not likely to need full power. More likely when I need full power, I'll be out in the open running gas.
I'm not too concerned about cold weather issues, either. Cold weather is rare enough here in central Florida, that if its cold enough to cause the propane an issue, it'll be cold enough to keep the wife inside, too, so I'll just run gas.
Thanks for the link, I will definitely check that out!

Re: Farmall cub propane
Looking back at the original poster's original post, it sounds like Kgjosh's Cub was converted completely to run on propane only. Is this correct? Or is it set up for both propane and gas?
Incidentally, welcome to the forum, and Howdy, neighbor! I'm only about two hours away from you.

I would think to have a engine that can run on both gas and propane, you just nest a vaporizer in-line with the carburetor. The only notable drawback I heard with this type of dual fuel engine is one fuel type tends to get used more than than the other, so the unused one is often allowed to deteriorate until it cannot be switched over without repairs. Older manlifts were often dual fuel, so this was where I heard of it.

the power loss isn't really substantial; its about a tenth of total horsepower (1 horsepower for the Cub). You would need to consider increasing the compression ratio if you wanted to recover that loss on a propane engine. Propane has a very high octane rating (Comparable to premium gas - natural gas is even higher!), so the CR can be boosted a fair bit.
