Okay, here are a couple of pictures of the alternator and external resisters.

Don't ask me what the light bulb is for.

I would assume that with the alternators, it's pretty safe to say that they've been converted to 12 volts.

2nd photo, the light bulb is used to keep the alternator from back feeding the ignition system. Without the bulb the engine wouldn't shut off once it was started.
I have an excuse. CRS.

Eugene wrote:My parts manual says the first alternator on a Cub was 1975, starting at serial number 248125.

The conversion from 6 volt generator to 12 volt generator took place in late 1962 at serial number 221293.

So, thinking converted from generator to alternator.

It was in 1964 Eugene, and it was a red and white cub :D

I have a wall fall of automotive and engine reference books. I just read them and report the printed material. I make no inference to their accuracy. I know of several references that have errors in the material.

So, , , , it's not my fault. It's someone else's.

You need a resistor, diode, or a warning light, in the circuit in between the alternator and the coil or there is enough voltage to keep the tractor running even with the key off.

Could you possibly post a picture of this setup? Thanks.

I'll try to get some pic's. In the mean time here's a site Eugene posted some time ago from Yesterdays Tractors, http://www.yesterdaystractors.com/ttalk ... 32845.html
Hope that helps! :coffee:

So since we've determined that they've been convered to 12 volts, what is the group size of the 12 volt battery that will fit in the battery box?

Make that 26R (so the + and - poles are in the correct position)
