Generator or Alternator?
Looking over the 2 Cubs I purchased earlier this week, I noticed that both have alternators instead of generators. One is a 1962 and one is a 1963. It's been a while since I owned tractors that new. I'm assuming that both came with generators and were switched at some time. Is that a correct assumption? Both have external reisisters too. Does that have anything to do with a alternator conversion?

Sonny, you are correct, the resistors are attached to the coils.

Re: Generator or Alternator?
Ignition points have an operating voltage of 9 volts or less. Usually some where between 4 1/2 volts to 9 volts. Much more than a continual 9 volts and the point burn.
The resistor drops the operating voltage in the ignition system by about 50%. If the alternator is putting out 14 volts to charge up a 12 volt battery, the ignition system is operating at around 7 volts.
The ballast resistor is considerably less expensive than purchasing a 12 volt coil with internal resistor.

Re: Generator or Alternator?
Eugene, so your assumption is that they have probably been converted to 12 volt? The Cubs are still setting outside on the trailer due to the nasty weather we've had all week. Between the snow, rain, freezing temps., and high winds, I haven't been able to force myself to go out and unload them or take a closer look at them. It's supposed to be warmer next week. Man, I hope so....

Re: Generator or Alternator?
My parts manual says the first alternator on a Cub was 1975, starting at serial number 248125.
The conversion from 6 volt generator to 12 volt generator took place in late 1962 at serial number 221293.
So, thinking converted from generator to alternator.

Re: Generator or Alternator?
Hi,
On the 2 Cubs you bought, the charging system originally looked about the same as your 1953 Cub originally was. Here is a page from the 1959 Cub owner's manual showing under the hood. I couldn't find a 1962 owner's manual where I was looking.
The parts book shows that they changed to an open, or ventilated generator in late 1962. I think it had a fan on the front, no pic of the pulley in the parts book I looked at.
Eugene, the Cub parts book I have says Cubs were 6 volts until serial number 224401.

Re: Generator or Alternator?
Hi Rick, Does either tractor have an oil pressure switch wired into the alternator? My Super C has been converted to a 12 volt negative ground alternator and has that oil pressure switch to activate the 10SI alternator, works flawlessly.

I'll try to get some pictures later today. Right now is snowing pretty good with about 4" of new snow on the ground. This is what the Cubs look like out my window right now....

Oh my. I worked outside yesterday in a short sleeve shirt until after sundown loading granite on my truck for delivery next week. Looking at your photo makes me want to build a fire, and stay in all day.
