Yes, you're right about the axles being installed on the Cub Cadet transmissions. The Cub and Lo Boy transmissions would later get the extension and final drives, but the Cub Cadets had the axles directly into the differential as you noted above.

You can see the additional housing on the front of the CC transmissions.

You can see 3 different shift levers too. The straight one is for Farmall Cubs with the standard seat. A second is for the Lo-Boys and Farmalls with Deluxe seats. The third is for the Cadets. Transmissions with the straight levers appear to already have the corks in the mounting holes on top of the case.

Jim, I noticed the corks in there & was wondering why did they only put them in 2 holes? Noticed the shift lever for the Cadets are longer than the ones for the Lo-Boys & deluxe seat model too.

Weights are dry and installed. I laid the wheels/tires on the hand truck flat so I could get the bolts in from the under side and dropped the weight on then up-righted them after bolting them on. Not the easiest way but it worked. Went and purchased 8~~~1/2" X 3" long carriage bolts, nuts & lock washers for $5 at the local bolt store.

Here is where I am with this project, took the hood to be blasted after doing a little welding on it. The blaster said he was gonna send it to the burn off oven first, I said I would heavily advise against that. He said why? I said cause this part is the gas tank and it will explode. He said oh I will just blast it, I said that is what I wanted to begin with is why I ask you to just blast it. The hood and engine are the only 2 major things left, I am gonna try and get the engine here next week and pull the oil pan and head off and see what some measurements are to see if it needs a full rebuild or just gaskets. I have a friend who works on magnetos and will take it to him to check out, he has a machine to test them on. I think the coil is bad in it because someone was running it off an external coil. He said he had 2 mags already rebuilt and he would exchange one for me for $85. I would like to keep mine if it's the original one but we will see. Also I don't know if it's worth the headache to try and find an early production block so everything would be #'s matching either. The block is the only thing on this tractor with the wrong casting date, all others are early June of 1947 or before. Some of the dates are as early as March and the latest is June 11th, 1947.

Not sure if plug wires can last 69 years or not but they look original. The rubber boots are hard and the wire is for sure cracked.

John Brillman at https://www.brillman.com/ can set you up with period-correct wire, all the way to a complete wiring harness. Excellent product.

I used to see John at the Southeast Old Threshers Reunion every year, he wasn't there this year. Have bought several things from him. He does have some wonderful products, thanks Bill!

Got the engine here today and pulled the head off. It's like a scratch off lottery ticket, you don't know what your going to find. I found a block that has been bored out .030" over and some wonderful looking cylinder walls with no scratches and no lip on the top, I'm pretty excited I don't have to bore it out. I think I will do a valve job on it after I check all the bearings etc. and probably hone it & install new rings.

The front of the engine has a casting date of 4-28-Q, the head is 3-28-Q. The block is the only thing that has been changed on this tractor.

Hi,
Nice pics of the engine. The bottom end is pretty clean. Might not have been used a lot since it was rebuilt, just a guess.
IH made .020, .030, and .040 oversize pistons for them, at least years ago, in the Cub parts book. Those are the aluminum pistons.
This is just sort of a question,
If you have .030 oversize, and it needs a rebore, is .040 big enough to work in an engine that is worn much. The difference from .030 to .040 is not a lot, if the cylinder walls are worn much at the top. Maybe Jim B. will post what he thinks about it. :)

I suppose it depends on what you find when you start measuring. If 040 won't do it, aftermarket 060 are/were available.
