Exhaust manifold Stripped out

Postby Figo40 » Fri Mar 11, 2016 8:27 am

Good morning all,
My exhaust manifold threads are gone, I'm talking about where the pipe threads into the manifold for the verticle muffler. Should I just get a new manifold or anyone know of a trick to fix it?
I dread trying to take mine off the engine. I do have have an Acetelene torch and plenty of Kano-Kroil!

It is 1 inch pipe thread, you may be able to retap it, but when tapping cast iron, machinists tell me not to use oil, and do wear safety glasses. As to removing the manifold, they are not unusually too bad. Spray the nuts with Kroil once a day for 2 or 3 days then unbolt. When reinstalling the manifold I like to use Copper Coat on the gasket to insure a good seal.
If you are not part of the solution,
you are part of the problem!!!

You don't need another manifold. The female portion of the manifold for the exhaust pipe is pipe threads.

Has the exhaust pipe broken off flush with the manifold? If so the remainder of the exhaust pipe can be removed from the manifold.

If the manifold threads have been stripped flat, a plumber will be able to cut new threads.

It's probably easier to work with the manifold on the bench. Once repaired or with a new manifold you will need new gaskets, perhaps nuts, and a stud or two.

Still thinking. It may be cheaper to purchase a good used manifold than to hire a plumber. Last time I hired a plumber it cost me $140- for just under an hours work and parts.
I have an excuse. CRS.

The pipe rusted off and the threads are still in the manifold. The threads would need a good chasing. I'm going to JP Tractor Salvage Monday so I'll lookinto a good used one

With the pipe rusted off, you should be able to remove the remainder with some patient grinding with a die grinder and some persuasion with a coal chisel.

I would think 1 inch pipe taps would be a rentable item, as most brand name ones are around 50 - 125 bucks new. Otherwise try wire brushing the threads before chasing, that may be all the threads in the manifold needs.

This has been posted on before, removing the rusted pipe, welding, brasing, etc. A quick search found several posts, here's one: viewtopic.php?f=1&t=80792&p=646635&hilit=repair+manifold+threads#p646543

Here's a link to a How To I did some years back that might be of help to you? I've yet to run across a manifold with the threads stripped out, but I guess it's possible? Not a whole lot of money to invest to get it back into shape, just some of your time.

I like that last one, I'm going to try that with the pipe nipple!

Just got lucky, I found a 1" pipe tap at work! I'll take pics.

Use some Permatex Anti-Seize on the threads when you reassemble.

Anti-seize will only ensure that the pipe is perpetually loose and flopping around, at least until it burns off and the pipe rusts back in place.

Not if you pipe wrench it into place.

You should use regular muffler clamps if you want to remove the exhaust pipe anyway. 1 3/8 u-bolt exhaust clamps are fairly cheap.

Use lots of never sieze or copper-kote. For this application, it's better to wipe off excess than have too little on.

I agree, anti-seize does not mean anti-tightening.

Didn't say you couldn't tighten it. You can tighten it until you snap the manifold off the engine.

I said it won't STAY tight.

Once the pipe's installed there's absolutely no need to ever take it out, until it rots off again in 25 years, anyway.
