Trailer hitch for a drawbar

Postby Buzzard Wing » Thu Aug 25, 2005 9:24 am

Got a trailer hitch so I could use Rufus to haul the boat to the launch and found the 3/4" shaft to be too big.

I pulled a Valley 1 7/8 ball off the 50. It was all kinds of cracked and I found out why. It is a carriage bolt through a ball and the PO had overtightend it (enough to crack it in several places). The carriage bolt seems to fit fine in a drawbar hole. Just don't tighten it till it cracks.

Anyone know where these are sold?

I made one out of a piece of I beam. I left enough of the webb to line it up on the draw bar so that there was no latteral stress on the bolts.

After looking at what ya'll sent me I think I have exactly the right thing. A plate for a HappiJac truck camper setup. I bought the whole rigging on eBay and only wanted the shock turnbuckles (which work great). Since the 3/8" steel plates are for an older Chevy truck and the other parts that attaches to the bumper are in good shape and can be used later or sold it makes sense to drill em out.

After reading Jim's post I pulled em out and of course the holes don't line up.

I will post a picture of the Valley ball. It looks to be the perfect setup, no muss no fuss, just bolt it down (not too tight of course, or you will crack the ball!). The shank will easily fit a drawbar.

My 2" ball has a bolt that's bolted directly through the center hole on my Cub drawbar  . If I need to take it off...I just unscrew the nut! :D

Balls

I've got two on the drawbar, both of which fit nicely, one comes off and the other doesn't!

I keep putting the PB Blaster to it, but so far it's thumbing its nose at me. I even tried liberal heat, but no good.

Time and patience. :?

for the W6, since it is intended for heavier loads than the cub, i bought an under step bumper type receiver hitch, which is merely the 2" tube welded to a flat plate, intended to bolt to the step bumper of a pickup.
with this setup, i can change balls, or go to a pintle hitch easily. cost $30 in JC Whitney, i think.

It seems you can't really find the smaller shank ones anymore. Here is what the ball looks like after I took the big pipe wrench to it to get it off.

For all I am going to use it, I think I could get away with JB Weld???

Yeah, the smallest shank you can find these days on a hitch ball is 3/4"... The holes in the standard Cub's drawbar are either 5/8" or 11/16", but regardless, they're too small for a standard ball. You can't find those junk balls with the carriage bolts anymore precisely because they split when you tighten them down too hard... Not safe for highway use.

Either you have to drill the drawbar out, or add a plate like the other guys did.

Just out of interest, what is the diameter of the Ball over in the states, about 35 years ago we changed from 2" to 50mm in the UK and France came up from a fiddly little ball of about 1" diameter to 50mm. We can tell the size difference, the 50 has a flat on top, sometimes with 50stamped in.

Pat, general sizes are 1 7/8 and 2 inch. This covers average size utility trailers, boat trailers and such. However, they do come in larger and smaller sizes for special purposes. 8)

I know this is silly, but the easiest solution is to just up drill the drawbar to 3/4 and be done with it. Saves on all the rigamaroe.

Now if you got a bolt something on the bar I would opt for a 2" receiver. That gives you much more options and flexability. I have a receiver on the front and back of the H. That covers me for wagons, trailers, and various rigs for pulling things. And, you can quick change everything in a second without tools.
