Mott flail clearance.

Postby Matt Kirsch » Tue Jan 26, 2016 1:39 pm

The flails should run right close to the shroud on a Mott mower, right?

My mower's been welded at some point in its life, and the bead burned through to the underside of the shroud. One of the flails is hitting the weld when the flails get wound up, making an awful grinding noise and throwing sparks.

The weld doesn't seem to protrude much, just a fraction. I'm just wondering if the flails should be running that close to the shroud.

It will be a day or two before I can get to my Mott. It's dismounted and in storage. Shouldn't be much effort to get some measurements.

Never checked the clearance between the knives and the hood. It's not much.

Bent knife/knives? Worn parts utilized in mounting the knife?
I have an excuse. CRS.

You better check the bearings...the bearings were gone on mine and the cutter bar had eaten into the bearing housing. This allowed a LOT of play.

The finish cut blades are longer than the rough cut blades. I have the finish cut on mine, I will look in the morning. Seems to me they are very close. Mott is now Alamo and you might want to look at the profiles of blades. Maybe your blades don't have the right bend to them...fatigued??

Yes, they are sometimes that close, I have one I had to grind off a weld to have enough clearance. If they didn't pass close there would always be a batch of mowed grass piled up on the bottom the housing.

Could be the case...they do sell right and left blades. Could idea to buy an equal number of both.
I had one that just had left blades from the PO.

They are sharpened on both sides, and you turn one right and left on each pin.

Would that even work? Shouldn't there be a left and a right blade on every pivot? Sort of like this with the uprights touching _||_ Or did every pair have one sharp edge facing forward and one facing rearward?

I actually know that and have an electric flail blade sharpener. Takes about 10 minutes to refresh the blades sure beats taking them off to sharpen and mix up the right and left blades.

I don't have the Mott sharpener, but it takes me about 20 minutes with a 4 1/2 inch hand held grinder. And I agree, it sure beats taking them off to sharpen.

I can't detect any play in the bearings. The knives are all new.

I was expecting that it was normal for the blades to run close because on the farm we have several pieces of equipment that have blowers on them. If you don't keep the paddles running really close to the shroud, the blower does not work well. The rule is that the paddle is close enough to catch a nickle but far enough away to leave a dime.
