found a frog in my.......

Postby TurboRoadster » Mon Jan 11, 2016 8:53 am

carb.
The previous owner couldnt get it to idle at all but could get it to run well enough for me to see that the motor was healthy and sounded good except for tune up needs, so I bought it and brought her home.

Anyways, I drop the carb off and tear into it for a refresh and holy smokes, there was a petrified tree frog in the center of the carb, somehow it made it way into the air inlet and crawled on into the center and died who knows how long ago. I'm betting its gonna run better minus the frog.

What oddities have you found in your tractor?

Bought my standard Cub, had been parked in a shed for several years and not running. Got tractor home and finally started the engine. Hazel nuts flew out of the exhaust pipe.

Several years later I was putting a weather cap on the exhaust pipe. Dropped the nut into the exhaust pipe. Magnet on long stick and pulled out the nut and a much larger nut. The 2nd nut was a surprise.
I have an excuse. CRS.

1937 buffalo nickel in the gas tank.
There are two ways to get enough Cubs. One is to continue to accumulate more and more. The other is to desire less.

I had a beetle carcass, in the fuel inlet of the sediment bowl, in the gas tank. Would flip back and forth, stopping the fuel flow, sometimes, like a "butterfly valve"
"bugged " me for a while, til I discovered it!

I've heard of having a frog in your throat, but not in a carburetor throat.

I've seen an assortment of things in gas tanks. We once found an extra connecting rod nut in the oil pan of a small block Chevy. My brother had the car since new, so we assume it was in there from the factory. Somewhere along the line the nut had been squished from the sides enough that it would no longer thread on a bolt. Don't know if that happened to it in the engine or if it was deformed before hand. I suspect deformed before hand and then it didn't thread on it was dropped into the inverted engine at assembly time.

I was working on my 73 Ford a while back and tore out the floor mat. There was not much floor left on the drivers side so I was pounding out the rusted floor and found dog food in the cab mount. I assume a mouse stashed it there at some point.

Years later, working on my aunt's 65 Dodge Monaco to prepare it for sale at her house, I got it running and walked around to the back of the car just to listen to the exhaust. I noticed dog food on the floor and thought that was odd. They didn't have a dog. A little later I walked behind the car again to find more dog food on the floor. I then realized it was coming from the exhaust pipes. Darn mice!

MY Oliver 440 has a flat piece of metal about 4x6 x 1/16 in thick in the gas tank. Just lays on the bottom. Must have been put there when tank was built. Has never created a problem.

Years ago when I worked at the IH dealer we had an Ohio Edison truck that would run for a week or two then quit. You go out on a road call it would start & run for another week or two. I dropped the fuel tank & found marble. They would get suck up the snorkel tube & block the fuel. When it would sit the vacuum would drop & so would the marbles. I was scratching my had for awhile.

Back in the day , Uncle bought a ford Country Squire station wagon , always had a rattle in the back fender area.
Took it back too have it checked and was told—there was a soda can with rock in it between the back wheel well. There was a note on it ,that said
How long did it take you too find this !!!
