finally getting both the cub and 140 running pretty smoothly. the radiator plug on 140 block is still stuck and rounded and the lower drain plug on the cub radiator is stuck. anyhow I have read many threads on removal - safest I suppose seems drilling the center and increasing bit size till you got a casing of plug left then carefully remove.
anyhow my question is since both are running okay should I bother trying to free the plugs ?? i know it would be ideal to be able to drain them both completely (oppose to poppin a hose off) - is it necessary though ,,,i know some folks never change their coolant

Well, do you know when the last time the coolant was changed? I'd say you might not need to be bothered. If course it won't hurt to do it if you really want to.

Myself, I'd repair the drain plugs but that's the kind of guy I am. For sure you need to check the antifreeze content to Insure you don't have a freezeup and ruin your engine blocks or radiator tanks. All of my tractors get all fluids replaced after I purchase them since I have no idea what the PO might have in there or how long its been in there.

I would eventually get them out and change the coolant as well. However, its not critical to do it immediately if cooling properly. It snowed here last night so I'd be planing on a nice Spring day to do them both!

Me too. If everything is working like it's supposed to I'd wait until warmer weather and when you don't mind the tractor being down for a bit so you're not rushed trying to fix it.

Right on Al. Nothing worse than heading out to get something done with your tractor and running into a problem needing fixed ... especially one you knew about ahead of time! Arghhhh!

If you have not already done so, when you are doing the coolant changing check out the threads on flushing the block to remove the buildup and improve the cooling. Stan

Yep, fill her up with straight white vinegar and work it for a couple days. Meaning heat cycle several times if possible. The more the better. You may find some leaks, but it is from removing the gunk that has plugged the leak for years. Not from vinegar eating away at metal.
