magneto grease
got magneto off tractor and opened up. manual calls for filling recesses with IH high temperature grease....wondering what ya'll use for this?? also says least every year that the distributor gear and chamber be cleaned and packed with magneto ball bearing grease ,,,recommended done by IH dealer ....what do ya'll do about this and oil use? searched forums ,,,some folks say they have never greased these areas in 50 years

by way finally got feeler gauge and checked the breaker points - was too tight,,gonna have to open it up today after work.

Re: magneto grease
The original magneto grease was very thick and the oil would not separate and go where it didn't belong. I have used dielectric tune-up grease, on the theory that it wouldn't cause problems if it did escape. Another option is high temperature wheel bearing grease (intended for disk brake systems). I think either choice is reasonable.

I just cleaned up a J4 magneto that probably had the original grease in it. It was the consistency of a non-hardening putty. Thanks for the suggestions on a replacement, Jim.
BTW, the mag had the original metal rotor pinion in it.

I use the high temp wheel bearing grease with good results.
