gear oil leak
I was servicing my tractors today, and when I got to my 53 Cub I noticed gear oil dripping out of the hand hole cover. The tractor was sitting on my driveway, nose pointing down on the slight grade of where I parked it. A drop every 30 seconds or so. All my tractors (anything with an engine actually) are non leakers, so I was suprised to see a leak. Common problem? I still have everything I need to split it, just don't have the nice shop like I had in Illinois. Any suggestions?

Re: gear oil leak
Assuming that the transmission is not overfilled, sounds like the input shaft seal is leaking. Bring it to the Barnyard Bash the beginning of June. Better yet, bring it down to Deep South Cub Fest in February.

Re: gear oil leak
I'd love to make the Barnyard Bash in 2016, with or without a Cub. If I can use my sons garage this winter, I can do it at my leisure. But I really need to make the Barnyard Bash, not too far from Pittsburgh, and I'd like to meet forum members. Thanks for the input Don.

Re: gear oil leak
It probably is not leaking nearly as fast as you saw it dripping. There is a low place in the torque tube that slowly fills with oil, and if you park it nose low the accumulated oil runs forward and drips out. First thing to do is check the transmission oil level, the check plug is a small plug low on the left side. The transmissions accumulate water from being washed, condensation, and being out in the rain. Mine are never left out in the rain, and only washed a couple times a year for parades and shows, and even parked in an insulated building, but it is amazing how much water builds up in a transmission in a couple of years.

Re: gear oil leak
Good point John. I just greased the TO bearing and parked it. It doesn't drip when parked on the level.

Another option is The Cub Tug, typically in early August.

This one is closer to you, however, for some of the forum members distance it not normally high on the list of criteria for selecting a CubFest to attend.

If I go to both, I don't have to make a decision.

Or all three! It's definitely warmer in Sneads, FL in mid-February. Sometimes not by much, though.

Be prepared! Some bodies gonna make a wise acre comment about you and all the hot air around here. I would never do such a thing but there's an element on here that enjoys making those types of comments.John *.?-!.* cub owner wrote:As I remember we were warmer in eastern Mo. than you all were at Sneads last year.
