1948 cub carb upgrade questions.

Postby Wilbilly » Sat Oct 31, 2015 12:12 am

To start with I should of ask this frist, but iv bough a zenith carb off a 154. Iv been chaseing this carb trouble with this cub every sence iv had it, you alwase had to run with choke on about half on. To make a long story short after trying several things with the old carb I found that the top half was bent down enough where the screws go though it wouldn't let it seal up good. So the question is will this new zenith carb work on my cub? It a 48 all original manafold and all. If not what would be the best second option? Thanks in advance

You can straighten a carb top by building a jig http://farmallcub.com/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?t=24466and then really clean and adjust the float. Should solve your problem.
The question on the Zenith carb off a 184, I think the manifold should bolt on but I have not tried it. The throat of the Zenith carb on the 184 is 1 inch I believe, and the cub is 3/4. I have never messed with the Zenith carb. Others on here seem to love them.

If you don't want to do this yourself, there are several forum members who are set up to straighten the carb top. Usually someone at a cubfest is working on carbs. Cecil, Bob McCarty, Don McCombs, and others who CRS prevents me from remembering names. You can post for an assist and someone will help you out. Stan

After you make a jig how do you use it? Dose it go in a press of something?

It is common sense to take a method and try it. If it fails, admit it frankly and try another. But above all, try something.

The Zenith carburetor will fit the original manifold and work on your 48 Cub.

The choke control linkage on the Zenith is via cable. You will also need to change the fuel line to match the carburetor.

I have tractors with the IH carburetor and Zenith Carburetor. Both carburetors work well.

Best option, perhaps, is to mail the IH carburetor to one of the guys on this site who works on them. They will go completely through the carburetor. Second best option is to make the jig to straighten the top of the original IH carburetor.
I have an excuse. CRS.
