I replied to this before, but for some reason it apparently did not post. When timing the J4 there is only one click, not a second one. There are instructions in the HOW TO section, but basically turn the mag with top as close to engine as possible, set engine to #1 (front) piston at TDC with the timing mark and pointer lined up, then rotat magneto away from engine till it snaps. It frequently will turn a little to far due to the spring releasing, so you may need to turn it back just a little afterward, and tighten a bolt. Turn the engine over a couple times to make sure it is tripping at the mark, tighten both bolts, DONE.

Just make sure to have it grounded through a spark plug or other path to release the energy as it turns over when you're testing it.

Agreed, or if on tractor make sure it is turned off. Also make sure your hand is not on the side terminal when testing it.
