New tire/tube sizes

Postby lloyd430 » Mon Aug 15, 2005 9:30 pm

Alright guys, I went to get new tubes for the rear tires, Like I told the guy at the tire store, The only thing the tire says besides "Goodyear" 7.2-24 on a 6" rim, and the tire guy tells me that he can't get a tube because he needs the modern measurements? I have searched the archives and I haven't found the same information. Also I went to m.e.miller site and the math they "explain" on how to convert doesn't add up. They still list a 7-24 as old and new, but then give a 750(7.5)-24 to be equal to 9.5-24. Let me know if you guys have any ideas. Basically I need new tubes for old tires.

thanks,

My idea is that you need to get a new tire store.....the one you are dealing with now isn't much of one.

Like Bud, I think you need to try another tire store, but I beleive you will have a hard time finding a tube for a 7.2x24 tire. If my memory serves me correctly that was on the very ealry cubs, and later they went to a 7 inch rim and changed to 8.3x24 as the standard tire. miller has recently started selling the 7.2, but I don't know of anyplace else to get that size.
If you are not part of the solution,
you are part of the problem!!!

Lloyd,

I see what you found as confusing in Ed Miller's catalog. He was giving examples of tire size designations... not necessarily that they were all the same size. Since you obviously have Ed's catalog, turn back to page 6 and follow the first item all the way to the right. You'll see that he offers the correct tube to fit your tires for $30 ea.

The reason I recognized your tires as original 7-24 Goodyears is that I have them on my '50 demonstrator, and they look noticably smaller. Mine are mounted on 7" rims. Someday I hope to swap the rims for a pair of 6" that I also have... but then they won't be original.

Rims

Postby allenlook » Tue Aug 16, 2005 1:32 pm

I'm assuming my 8.3x24 tires go on 7 inch rims, yes? I'm considering two new rims for my ag tires as the Calcium really got to the old ones...

This eBay Auction would imply so...

I also posted the same thing in another qeustion that someone had responded to, but I figured it should also go here

I did find out today that Miller lists a 7-24 tube for $30, but they actually ship you a 8.3/9.5-22 instead- that they list separately for $22. So I called the local tire store with the 8.3/9.5-22 number and my tubes will be installed tomorrow for $17 each. That’s better than buy one get one free compared to M.E. Miller.

I can see where they would stretch far enough to fit without giving a problem, but if you tried to use an overize one they would wrinkle, and then split after a while.

John is correct, you can stretch one size under, but don't go bigger unless you want to buy another set in a little while.
