Cub steerig box plug

Postby Moondoggie » Tue Oct 20, 2015 4:43 pm

Can anyone point me to a site that sells the Cub steering box expansion plug? It's the large one pressed into the front of the steering box casting. My "new" '52 was hard to steer and when I drained it there was water plus gunk. Blew out with air and tried to flush. Added new SAE 90W. Now the plug leaks pretty badly. Just looked at the Service Manual and on pg. 3-13 it is part #13. Also says there that it is a 2.25" plug. Looks bigger to me. Haven't tried to measure it yet. Would an auto supply place carry a plug that size?

Looks like a complete breakdown of the steering box is in order. New gaskets, seals, etc. I have a "parts" tractor if the gears are badly worn.

Thanks.

Local auto parts store or well stocked hardware store. You need to measure the opening to get the right sized expansion plug.
I have an excuse. CRS.

:Dito: also, be sure to use sealer around the edges. I prefer the Permatex Aircraft sealant.

And any make tractor dealership. Local auto parts or hardware store will be the least expensive.

Correct and is cost effective if you purchase several items.

What I object to is the shipping and handling charge for an inexpensive item. Example: I need a pad for a palm sander. The pad is reasonably priced, $8.??. But when the shipping and handling is added, the total price is right at $20.

Time and fuel are expensive, too. I find the auto parts store can get the item, tomorrow. 2 trips, kill a half hour or more, and a gallon of fuel. TM has a first class envelope option, for small, light stuff. I agree that the shipping and handling, from some places, is terrible!

My 52' Cub is 30 miles away at farm but Sat. I'm going to look at my steering box as I thought it just had drain plug, not the rounded one shown in picture. My CUB is hard to steer even with tire air and oil level correct. None of the several mechanics have ever commented on it when they work on the tractor. Couple members have stated their cubs steer like power steering. Hard to believe.

Might want to jack the front end up and check for roughness and binding in all the joints if its very hard to steer.
