Barn door(s)

Postby allenlook » Sun Aug 14, 2005 8:45 am

Fellas. I finally set up all the woodworking and metalworking tools in the barn, which means Jay gets ejected.

I closed off the open end of the car port on the side of the barn so it's walled front and back, and now just the long low side needs to be closed in.

It's quite a long side, probably 40 feet? My main desire is to keep out blowing snow... My two ideas are to build an actual wall and put in 2-4 sliding barn doors, or to hang 40 feet of clear plastic strip-wall like they use in warehouse doors... Any other ideas, and if so, where to get the parts - I can't even seem to find barn door hardware around here!

I've been thinking about doing the same thing on the back of my shed. What I want to do is make the 24 feet a series of sliding barn doors that will allow easy access to anything. You can get the sliding barn hardware from Tractor Supply Company.

TSC

Postby allenlook » Sun Aug 14, 2005 2:35 pm

Aha! I'll stop by TSC today, then.

There's a new one up the road a piece, and they're building an even newer one up the road only *half* a piece :)

I like TSC because I can get a gasket, a toy tractor for the kids, and a cowboy hat all in the same stop :D

Could try an Agway if there is one near you.

Stanley makes a good barn door hardware set as does Lawerence Hardware. Stanley should be available at any hardware store or box store. I have them applied to Two 4x7 doors and they slide very well and easy to use for my wife and young boys

Barn doors

Postby Mike's 49 Cub » Tue Aug 30, 2005 10:55 pm

On the barn I built I used an old door track from a barn that was being torn down. It was a round slider track so of course my doors slide. Not much clearance between door and barnsiding. If my doors were swinging I would box them in with blue styrofoam panels for insulation. I checked into the plastic strip's to hang inside my barn door. Wow ! Expensive ! Well, more than I want to pay. Seemed like somewhere around $300. My door is 10x10.

Hey Allen...With all the old barns in your neck of the woods...I'll bet you could come up with some barn door slides and hardware from some old barn being taken down. :D You might want to try some salvage yards too. :?

Nothin' beats a sliding barn door for ease of opening over a wide distance!
