6v Coil

Postby farmallcub52 » Wed Aug 26, 2015 8:40 am

I am going to replace mine this weekend does it matter if its listed as a tractor coil or can it be an automotive coil thats 6v is there a difference? May seen like a crazy question but I bought my last one at a auto parts store and someone told me should be buying tractor versions.

No difference. If you have a catalog used by auto parts stores, you will find that the coil lists a number of vehicles and usually a generic industrial/ag application.

Why are you purchasing a coil?
I have an excuse. CRS.

If your old one is working satisfactorily I would leave it alone, likewise the voltage regulator. They are both items that there seems to be a problem with the new ones being very poor quality. I assume (bad thing to do I know) that since nothing made in the last 25+ years has used a standard coil or regulator, none of the companies making or selling them have worried much about quality control.
If you are not part of the solution,
you are part of the problem!!!

If you are simply trying to make everything work but want it to look "pretty", just clean up the coil and regulator and paint them. They will look like new! Quality was definitely better "back then"!

P.S. But remove all the connectors everywhere, and clean them up bright and shiny!! And make sure your battery terminals and cables are clean and in good condition.

No.

The internal resistor is designed to reduce the operating voltage passing through the coil on the primary winding. You need some where around a minimum of 4.5 volts for the coil to "fire".

A 6v Cub will work fine with a 12v coil without an internal resistor. The later 12v Cubs would use the 12v coil with an internal resistor.
