Low resistor coil

Postby ub54 » Thu Jul 30, 2015 12:32 pm

Well , my 48 cub is done , except for one thing .On a different thread I had started I said I burned my resistor coil , I now have 2 new ones and I'm ready to put one on .
Before I do tho , I want to make sure it's wired right . So, as you would look at the back of a 4 position switch I have the F wire hooked to the F resistor band at the bottom right , the A wire hooked to the right side of the amp gauge , and the other side of the amp gauge is wired to the starter .I have the lights wired right I know. Is this right ? I bought 2 new resistors because I figured I'd smoke one of them . I know this should be simple but in my case it may as well be algebra 4 . One other thing , when I burned the last resistor I didn't have the wire from the amp gauge to starter connected . Could that have caused it to melt?

You also need a wire from the right side of Ammeter to BAT connection on the Cutout. Below diagram should help. This diagram applies to a cub w/ magneto and cutout.

That's the one I'm calling the A wire and its wired to the right side of the amp gauge, so I guess I'm good . But could not having the wire from the amp gauge to starter be the reason thelast one melted ? Thanks Bill

I went ahead and put the resistor on ------ no smoke but, it's not showing a charge either. In fact maybe a -1 amp, is that normal ?

No not normal, unless you have the lights on. If wired correctly and the generator and cutout (or voltage regulator) are operating correctly, it should eventually show a charge, especially at higher rpms. Also, if you disconnected the generator, you need to polarize it to match the battery polarity.

At one time it was off the tractor, how do you polarize it ?

Using a short length of jumper wire you simply make a momentary connection between the Batt and Gen terminals on the cutout (or voltage regulator). You should get a little spark. Do this with the tractor not running.
