By way of introduction, and a question

Postby WCBowman » Fri Aug 05, 2005 9:43 am

Greetings all,

I find myself in an interesting situation. I have recently taken over the responsibility of a Cub low-boy for our church and it doesn't run so good.

I live in Columbus, OH and the tractor (and the 17 acres I'd like to mow with it) are on the east side of Reynoldsburg, OH. I have replaced the spark plugs, and have rebuilt the carbureator, but it still just barely runs. No throttle response really, only the middle 4 "clicks" or so on the throttle run smothly.

It also has no power, I can engage the belly deck, but if I put it in gear with the deck running, and try to move, it just dies.

I am semi-mechanical, but just at the shadetree mechanic level. So am I have come here for advice.

I have read everything I can here and in the repair manual, but I feel just a bit over my head.

Would anyone be able to point me in the direction of professional help, or would anyone be willing to be my restoration buddy ;) I would like to have the tractor running smothly for next summers cutting season at the latest.

Also, and I do not think this is the case, if I should not be looking at my old tractor to do regular cutting duty, I'd like to know that too. It has a 5 ft or so deck underneath it now, and I'd like to take it up to a 10 ft. pulled deck if possible.

Thanks for your time and I look forward to any advice you can offer.

Court, welcome to the forum! You are in luck, There are several forum members who either live or work very close to you. I am in Stoutsville, just about 20 or so miles south of Reynoldsburg. Evielboweivel (Ron Selzer) lives in Lancaster and works in Pickerington. Bill Poor is in Amanda. And there are others.
I would be willing to assist you if I can. (I can scratch my head with the best of them!) You can send me an e-mail or a private message either one if you would like to pursue this. E-mail is in my profile or just click on the bottom of any of my posts.

By the way, it sounds like you may have a governor issue. Just yell if you need help

Court:

Hi and welcome. I think that it is very thoughtful of you to take on the responsibility of the Church's Cub. I also have a feeling you will become very attached to it and will end up acquiring your own Cub...

Here is some general info, and I hope it will help you. Just about everything you need it there. It will take some reading though. If you anything at all like me - I am a voracious reader, then it probably will be quite interesting.

Hope this helps..

As for a restoration buddy, there are many in Ohio who own Cubs and I am sure that you will find a buddy or three :!:

Anyways, just as a reminder....

First, Image to the greatest forum on the internet, and to the Cub Family. You will find that all the folks on this forum are kind, helpful and just full of Cub info and knowledge. They also happen to be the finest folks I have ever met :!: :D

Ok, so here is the spiel Image:

I would suggest that you read this thread: New Members and Visitors, Please READ Prior to Posting. There are many great links to informative pages such as the ATIS FAQ's 1 and ATIS FAQ's 2, The Best of H.L. Chauvin who has written very interesting articles on troubleshooting common problems with your Cub.

Also, you might want to visit the Cub Manual Server as there is tons of info on servicing, maintaining and re-building your Cub. In addition to this basic information, there are also a number of other useful tools available on the server. There is the Specialty Services page which has contact info for neat stuff like getting your seats recovered, buying quality Decals, Serial Number tags and a host of other neat items. Also there are the Parts Pages - both Used Parts Suppliers and New Parts Suppliers pages with links to quality dealers. I am always looking for YOUR favourite dealers for New and Used Parts to include here. These are intended to complement the businesses who support FarmallCub.com Website.

I would also recommend that you visit Binder Books and purchase the three most important manuals you can own for Maintenance, Repair and Rebuilding your Cub. These are the Owner's Manual, the GSS-1411 Service Manual and the TC-37F Parts Manual. Although they are available on the Cub Manual Server, it is better is you also have your own paper copy. Binder Books is the only Authorized IH Publication Reprint House and they have the best quality manuals available. Most other's are not of the same quality. Just a personal thought here, the I&T Shop Manuals, although helpful in some areas, really are not sufficient for the job. If you wish though, they are good additional reference works.

In addition to the above information, don't forget to check out the various articles that are available to help with your Repair, Restore, Rebuild or just your Maintenance Projects. There are a number of sub pages such as Electrolysis or Rust Zapper's, Maintenance Tips, Jigs and Techniques, Implement and Part Sketches and of course the Paint, Decals & Other Finish Questions which has the Paint Chart and the Paint Committee Decisions links.

I truly hope that you enjoy your Cub and that you will be a frequent contributor to the forum. Again, Image to the Cub FamilyImage :D

There is a glass sediment bowl with a shut off valve just under the gas tank. Shut off the fuel and remove and clean the bowl. I would get a new gasket first. there shopuld be a brass screen at the top oe thestrainer bowl. You said you rebuilt the carb. How much of a rebuild did you do? any way after cleaning the bowl I would shut the fuel off again and remove the jet. It is the hex brass piece on the side of the carb bowl. I would thurn the fuel on again and let some run in to a clean white bucket. If dirt or rust shows up drain the tank through a coffee filter to clean the dirt out. keep pouring a gallon or so of the clean fuel back through till it runs clean. I use the end fron a piece of telephone inside wire to poke out the jet and the blow it out with compressed air. That takes care of the don't cost much easy to do things. Always try those first. I would fill the tank with fresh gas till you get it running good. A good running cub will run on half diesel or kerosene. From time to time I have had either on hand and wanted to use them up. just ran them 50 50 with gas and if any thing had a little more power. You can run stale gas through the same way after coffee filtering it.

As far as swinging a 10 foot mower FUGGETABOUTIT. The 5 is about max for a cub. Even then you will have trouble in tall grass.

Yeah, but if the 10ft mower is self-powered, then no problem.

Court, sounds like you have a governor problem with your Cub. Maybe a broken spring or worn bushings up in there. Cleaning out the fuel system is a good idea, but probably not the cure.

How excellent

Wow,

What a great community, I am getting ready to head out for vacation, and thought I'd see if anyone had read my message before I left, hoping for some responses before I got back.

I should check the response time on the boards a bit before I set my expectations so low. Thanks all for the advice.

Bigdog:
Thanks for your offer, I will be back after next week, if you will permit me to ask for help and then not avail myself for a week when it is so kindly offered, I'd love to take you up on your offer to chew the fat about the tractor with you.

I will try the fuel line advice. I did clean the bowl and I cut a new gasket out of material, it leaks a bit, but seems to be clear. I should have mentioned it earlier.

Matt:
When you say I have a governor problem, my dim-witted ignorance has to ask... what's a governor?

I have the manual, but don't remember seeing it in there. If you can tell me what system it is in, that may help me track it down. It's a bigish book and all new so I probably just missed it.

I did find this which may be what I need though...

With the carb rebuild I just bought a rebuild kit and replaced the old parts with ones I got new ones of. (If that makes sense.) I also soaked it in carb cleaner overnight on a suggestion from a friend.

On the cutting deck, any ideas on a good brand or model for a 10' self powered deck?

I will try to find the governor some more, and thanks again for everyone's help.

Court, most likely you will not need to buy another governor. Perhaps a cleaning or maybe just an adjustment. Yell when you get back and we'll have a look.

Fuel problem, quite possible.

Check to see that the spark plug wires are going to the correct plug. Frequently two get swapped.

My first thought is a complete tune up. Plugs (done), points, condensor, retime the engine, compession check. Is this a magneto ignition? - if so the plug wires must be solid wire.

Another thought. Most church groups have at least one very good mechanic. It doesn't hurt to ask for help/advise. Of course, the good intentioned free help could be a big part of the problem

Good luck

Eugene.
