Outdrive Helicoil repair.

Postby coralhead » Wed Jun 10, 2015 7:48 am

I need to repair/Helicoil three threaded 5/8-16UNC threads in my out drive. Does anyone have the taper and bottom helicoil taps that I could use to fix this? I can acquire the helicoils.

Thanks in advance.

Helicoil had the patent on the system but it is long since expired. Others have lower-cost equivalents. Borrowing involves shipping cost both ways, trips for the mailing, the possibility that the borrowed tools will be faulty before or after you use them, etc. $30.00 plus shipping one way will make them yours to keep or sell.

Somewhere long ago on this site I posted the dimensions for a drilling jig for the bolt pattern on the final drive. Perhaps someone will locate it and post the link on this thread. The jig will be a big help in getting all the holes in proper position. You get just one chance to get it right with this part.

I agree with bus driver on this one. If heli coils aren't something you do regularly, I'd spring for the set up he linked. Find something to give yourself a few practice runs before you try the actual part. The investment and practice time is much better than stripping a coil

I was not aware of the lower cost of the permacoil inserts. I was looking at Helicoil Brand and thus the pricey price of the repair set. If I had known of the lower price I would have not asked and will purchase the permacoil set.. I have a machinist back ground and will look at making a drill jig. Thanks for the link.

The set mentioned does not contain a bottoming tap.

It's a shame you couldn't make it to the Barnyard Bash two weeks ago. We would have had what you need right here.

I got both the kit and bottoming tap off eBay inexpensively.

I know, I did not have the outdrive separated from the tractor then. :( The Barnyard kinda snuck up on me. I'm looking at next year though.

Check with your local auto parts and hardware store to see what they have in the line of thread repair tools and kits.
I have an excuse. CRS.

You don't have to remove the final to helicoil it. If you can get to the Cub Tug the end of July we can get it fixed.

I pulled both outdrives to put in new seals and brakes. The wifes tractor needs to have good brakes since the old one were worn and oil/grease soaked. I am looking at having the tractor back together with new paint by the end of July. :)

I have a similar issue. Is there anyone within a couple of hours of southern Michigan that would perform the repairs? I have one on each side that needs some work.

The Cub Tug in Somerset Ohio is the closest I know of.

That's a 4.5 hour drive. Sounds like loads of fun but may be too much of a drive.
