Cub-22 Mower

Postby TerraPromessaFarm » Wed May 27, 2015 8:35 am

We downloaded the manual for our 'new' cub-22 mower and got it installed on Rossa.
Went to the auto parts store and got a Gates belt. Greased and oiled everything I could find ... and the mower works great !
During the long weekend we cut about three acres of hay ( first time ever ! ). The sickle mower is a wonderful and terrifying piece of machinery !
I found plans here on the forum for making a outboard grass board - need to make one.

And the final result may not be pretty.

It looks to me like the drag link is a homemade job, I doubt it has one, or that one would work on it.

As a kid we laid down 35,000 bales with a Cub-22 and IH 7 Footer on our Farmall Regular. The one thing I can still hear Dad saying when raising any sickle bar to it's vertical position is to ENSURE ONLY YOUR PALM is on the bottom of the bar. A well adjusted or slightly cutter bar can drop under it's own weight when raised vertical - If you finger happens to be in the way, it will be removed - so it's no longer in the way. Seems like commons sense - but thought I'd share.

Enjoy your Cub-22 Mower.

Ken

I was raising the 7 footer on our H up one time, and had my leather gloves laying across the palm of my hand, and the sickle bar dropped some. My fingers were clear, but did lose half a glove finger.

Thanks Guys -
Yes I agree totally ! - I am VERY respectful of the blades on this mower and am sure to NEVER have anything in the blade path that I want to keep
I also give the mower a wide berth when walking around it ... just in case it cuts my "hold up rope" ... that thing would sure put a knot on my head !

I didn't get the hold up rod with the tractor... and I agree that the drag link looks home made ( not like the one in the manual )
We need to make or find a hold up rod, and use the plans from the forum to make a grass board and rod.

All things said though - it sure was a blast to cut a bunch of hay !!!
Just need to find a mini baler for Rossa to pull ! :D

Thanks for the advice ! Well heeded !

If you're not too concerned with historical accuracy, the "Kosch Clean Sweep" is a good metal grassboard. Admittedly, I find myself mowing without one more than I do with one.

I rebuilt my mower this last winter, and did a write-up here on it.

You might find some useful references in there.

Good luck! I love using my Cub-22. I could mow all day long...

Definitely will refer back to it when I can make time to rebuild...

OK Guys - another question on the mower ...
Sorry if this post should have been placed somewhere else ... it started with a " WooHoo I'm mowing" post ... :{_}:

I was reading the manual about adjusting the shoe soles for minimum cut height ... I looked at mine and they look ... well ... tired and abused :(
The inner one looks OK I guess - but it is adjusted flat against the bottom - it doesn't appear to be providing any lift ...

Could someone post photos of what they should look like in a healthy state ?
Here are a few photos of mine currently :

The outer shoe sole I know is still available through CaseIH... Mine was missing when I bought the mower, so I had to buy it new. In my pictures, it's Caterpillar yellow (came new in that color). Since you still have yours, you may be able to layer on more metal and salvage it. Even adjusted for the highest setting, it wasn't high enough for me, so I rigged a wheel on the end that has worked out really well.
