Starting after sitting a few years

Postby rsylvain » Sat May 16, 2015 9:27 pm

Started fine but does not have the RPM or power it use to. Found it is running on 2 cylinders. Spark but one was dry and other was gunned up. Changed plugs and governor spring. Have run Sea Foam in oil and gas for 2 hours and put MMO in cylinder heads and ran as well. Any suggestions before I pull the valve cover

Run a compression test. Wet and dry. It will help you determine whether you need to pull the head. I'd also either complete a full tune-up or at least double check the condition and gap on the points. Also check / set the timing.

If you can't fix it with a hammer, you've got an electrical problem.

Removing the valve cover and adjusting the tappets will allow you to inspect the assembies for free movement. Sticky valves/out of adjustment will also cause rough running, low power, overall poor engine performance. It will also help you decide if you need to remove the head to look at the condition of the valves and seats. JMHO. Stan[flash=][/flash]

Congrats on solving the problem. One additional comment: If a valve is stuck in the open position, it is possible to get some lubricant to the stem through the spark plug hole. A plastic soda straw inserted below the valve through the spark plug hole will channel spray lube like PB Blaster, Kroil etc to the valve stem. Lightly tapping on the top of the valve using a small rod or long screwdriver helps pop the valve down. Turn with hand crank and repeating the process will help free the sticky valve. Worked for me without removing the head. :D
