Last fall just as I got the '53 into its winter parking slot in the barn, it quit charging. The battery failed open circuit, 0V, no hope of recharging, so I figured it was that.
Fast forward to yesterday. New battery, still no charge.
Fast forward to this morning. Polarize the generator. Nothing. Short the Field to ground. Nothing. Swap out the original regulator with three others of unknown condition. Nothing. Mostly I was trying to avoid pulling the hood. Denial is not just a river in Egypt, you know.
Went back in the house to shop for replacement generators online. Got bored, went back out and pulled the hood. Tried the motor test on the generator. Yup, no worky.
Took the generator in on the bench and pulled off the dust cover. One of the brush holder springs had popped out and the brush wasn't making contact with the commutator!
Put it back in place and bent the end into a hook so it couldn't slip out again. Everything's back together with the original regulator, and it charges!
$0 in parts. Gotta love it.

Yup, ya do. Not only are no cost fixes the best kind, they are also the most satisfying.
