Governor

Postby Stribman » Thu Apr 16, 2015 1:20 pm

Hey guys, I am new to site , so not sure how things work around here , but thought I would ask for suggestions on fixing my governor , seems to be sticking , or letting tractor run too fast, when I do get speed to reduce tractor will stall? was thinking about trying to adjust set screw on end ? but am uncertain, any suggestions that don't require rebuild?
thanks, Strib

welcome to the forum, first thing to check is that the spring on top of the governor is not broken or stretched out, then make sure the pivot arm moves freely that the spring is hooked to, many are froze up from lack of lube

the spring looked ok and linkage works ok the gov , seems not to follow the speed of tractor , do you adjust linkage or something in gov to set to take up slack?

Before opening it up, make sure that the linkage between the governor arm and the carburetor is not gummed up or rubbing against the engine block. This is a VERY common problem with cubs, and easily fixed by just bending the rod a little bit. Sometimes it looks like it's free, but only binds or touches the block at a certain throttle setting. Anyway, it's easy to check before digging into anything else.

Had the same problem sorta with one of mine….I changed carbs and it acted like you describe….A quick readjustment of the rod that runs from the carb to the governor rod remedied it….Its pretty easy to do but the tractor I did it on was a little finicky and took me a bit of patience to get it right…. :D Dave

Also check the cross shaft behind the radiator for worn keyway or other slack. All the loose motion in the linkage needs to be removed for the governor to work as it should. Check the "HOW TO" forum or do a topic search for several fixes.

Hey guys, I am starting to get back around to working on my governor , I went ahead and pulled it off tractor , now I need some tips on how to separate the weight assemble from the housing ? I am considering using heat and try to tap them apart from front cover , anyone have any tips , do not want to crack this old cast iron? my trouble seems to be binding / from bent shaft or something hanging each revolution

Thanks for knowledge , I have trouble finding that stuff myself, -- cover was stuck tight, think someone used some gasket sealer on it maybe Indianhead ? but sure was tight, couple of good taps with a brass drift it started to move, and I found bearings had come out of cage, need to find a replacement bearing /cage.

If you mean the 3-part bearing, I obtained a set from my local IH Dealer.

That one makes more sense. Unfortunately. part number 43481D is about $40!
