Touch control issues
Took the '49 out to make some rows in my garden today. I hooked up the Cub 6 tool bar and moved the control stick and nothing happened. No twitch, nothing. The control lever felt like it had no load on it. I disconnected the tool bar, and I could move the rock shaft by hand; that shouldn't happen right? I did a cursory check on the control lever and it appeared to still be connected. Any suggestions before i tear into it tommorow?

Re: Touch control issues
Best case scenario is you're simply low on hydraulic oil. Second best is you've lost the drive gear off of the pump. Worst case would be internal problems with the Touch Control, usually noticeable. If you're low on hydraulic oil and there are no visible leaks it may be leaking into the engine crankcase through the pump seal, one way to tell is the crankcase is overfull. If all you need is to add hydraulic oil you'll need to cycle the control lever a number of times to bleed the air out and get it working again.

Re: Touch control issues
As Smokey said, best case is you are low on fluid, which if you have no external leaks means you have a crankcase full of HyTran due to the pump leaking. If the gear came off the pump you still should not be able to move the rockshaft by hand, at least not unless all the oil has drained, and even then it should be difficult. Look in the hood where the front rockshaft attaches and make sure all the linkage is attached. If neither of those is the problem I suspect you are in for a serious tear down.

Re: Touch control issues
Well, found that the TC was empty. I checked the oil level in the crank case and refilled the TC. Moved the rock shaft back and forth a number times. Checked the engine oil level again and sure enough, it was high. Now to start researching the pump repair...thanks everyone!

Re: Touch control issues
Daniel, you can order a pump kit from TM Tractor. There is a complete guide you can print from the "How To" section here on the forum. It was easier than I thought. Did mine about two years ago and all is well. Good luck, Tom.

Re: Touch control issues
If the pump is the early one, whihc being a 49 it could be, It will use a seal on the shaft rather than an o-ring, but you cannot tell til pump is removed.

Re: Touch control issues
Thanks John. I was reading about that in tonight's researcing. TM does not have the kit in stock right now so I will stop by the IH dealer this week to see what they can do for me.

Re: Touch control issues
IH supplies the wrong O-ring for the shaft seal and TM adds the proper one. I have an extra, as I machined my pump for a lip seal. Find out what generation of pump you have first.

Re: Touch control issues
I believe IH has corrected that problem. The last kit I got from TM had a note that the correct o'ring was now in the kit and a separate one was no longer needed. The kits TM sold came from IH originally.bob in CT wrote:IH supplies the wrong O-ring for the shaft seal and TM adds the proper one. I have an extra, as I machined my pump for a lip seal. Re: Touch control issues
I disassembled the hyd. pump this weekend. The shaft is sealed by an o-ring. There is wear on the shaft, a groove where the o-ring rides. You can see it as well as feel it. There are no sharp edges to damage the o-ring. I have not been successful in getting a picture to load so that is the best description I can give for now. Do you guys think the o-ring would last very long with this kind of shaft wear? Thanks, Daniel.

Re: Touch control issues
More than likely not. Here's a link to what Ricky Racer did to fix his, it's still holding up well. viewtopic.php?f=1&t=40331&p=674564&hilit=pump+repair#p674564
