Anyone know what happened to plans to build an IH plant in Wood River, IL.?
I know they ended up purchasing the Curtiss-Wright factory in Louisville but I don't remember why.
I found this in my picture folder and was noted from 1945.

The Louisville factory was government owned. The War Assets Administration was responsible for disposal of the factory. Compared to the costs of starting on a green field, I'm sure it was a deal that couldn't be refused.

I just checked some of what Guy Fay has written on this topic. At the time, there was a shortage of materials to build a new factory, mainly structural steel. It appears that buying an existing facility was more to deal with material availability rather than cost.

For some reason I thought they actually started construction but was halted. Maybe a water table problem.

Somewhere I got the impression they had started some dirt work. This document (from 1994) indicates "flood problems" but is itself so many years later that it may be repetition of false statements. It does indicate that 45 of the 160 acres is subject to flooding.

The photo is interesting. I assume it's a prototype. cultivating tobacco? and it looks like field hands in the background.

The tractor in that picture is some version of a prototype/preproduction model. There are several parts that are a noticeably different shape than the production versions. The front axle is one of the more obvious differences. There were quite a few of them out and being tested (I don't have the number.). There are other pictures out that do a better job of showing some of the differences.
I don't know what that crop is. Looks more like zucchini than tobacco.

I would think that it should read "40 acres or less" and not more ?
The back tires are mounted opposite the direction of the norm or is there a reason for that? (other than a smoother parade ride)
