Interesting engine serial number

Postby knucklebuster » Sat Feb 21, 2015 1:06 pm

One of my Cubs is a bit of a mixmaster. The serial tag/bolster dates to '74. The engine block and tube date to '65. The head dates to '74. The rear housings date to 74.

My question is about the hand stamped engine serial number. It is 606120299540X. I'm far from a cub expert, but I've never seen a serial number with this many digits. What does it mean? Replacememt block?

Another interesting thing about this cub is the touch control has no casting codes below the fill port. Is that normal? Of course none of this is of any consequence, I'm just curious. This is the strongest running cub I've ever driven, and my main lawn mower.

I can't comment on the engine sn. There is a second location for the part # of the TC block that is shown in this picture from Art Luke in an older thread:

Weird engine serial number for sure. The 154/185/184 LoBoy tractors had a serial number prefix of 60CT2U. Your last 6 numbers of 299540 would fall into the 1974 range. I wonder if your tractor was 'rebuilt' at the factory and that could be why they hand stamped a new engine serial number. This is just a wild guess. I can't imagine why they would have used a block from 1965?

Before the days of FIFO and not making large quantities of Cubs at the time, 9 years wouldn't be all that long for a block to sit in a corner somewhere. Especially if it got stuck on the wrong shelf, or the tag got ripped off it, or somebody needed a door stop for a shop door, or.......

(By the way FIFO is First In First Out)

Do you have any pics of the engine SN and cast code that you can post?

I'd like to see pictures of the date codes too. I'm thinking we have a misread on them.

I've kinda wondered about too "rigid" an interpretation of the serial numbers . I have a cub with the engine number stamped , but it looks like an over stamp . over an HA cub stamp , just like my "late" '51/'52 HA engine . coppersmythe............................................PS: I also have a late model cub with no cast date on the tranny.

Jim, I stand corrected. after a thorough cleaning, a magnifying glass, and bright light, the block casting code is "X". Indeed a 74 block. The engine serial still appears to be 606120299540X. Going off of what Trent said, and after searching the forums, others have reported engine serials beginning with "6OCTXXXX" and it may well read that way. I'm going to get it out in the sun (if it ever shines again) and take a look. I tried to take a pic of the engine serial but I just don't have a camera capable of getting a good shot.

I was able to find the part number cast into the inside of the TC, but I can find no date code.

Here is a pic of the block "X" code

and the bare TC.

I have a feeling, when you clean the paint and oil off a bit, your engine SN of:
"606120 299540X", will actually turn out to be (or poorly stamped and should be):
60CT2U 299540X, just like all the engine SN's did from about the end of '71/beginning of '72 on to the end of production.

Raymond, you may well be correct. I edited my post to reflect my doubts. I guess you replied before I had the edit complete. I just can't see as well as I used to.
