Sign a clutch needs Adjusting
My cub doesn't have near the pull power it once had. Could that be a sign the clutch needs adjusted. It does not slip it just shuts the engine down. You raise the idle enough and it normally will pull what ever but it use to do it at normal idle like the old days. Possible solutions?

The clutch has nothing to do with your power at the rear wheels so long as it isn't slipping. I would suggest that you start with checking/cleaning/gapping the points, compression check, and timing adjustment. All of those procedures have been covered extensively and can be found by using the search box at the top right.

Add adjusting the valves to that list.

Re: Sign a clutch needs Adjusting
I was afraid someone was going to say compression as the rings have not been changed in the last 28 years I have owned it. There is a lot of money in that as I can change out the rings but not sure if that would solved the problem due to wear and tear. We are talking a 48 cub. What is the normal cost to have it bored out to a larger dimension, new pistons and rings? What is the largest size anyone would recommend you bore the cylinders out to?

Normal cost for a complete rebuild. Machine shop (bore cylinders and turn crank), new pistons, rings, valves and a gasket kit runs about $1000 depending on where you order the rebuild kit from.
I think the max bore is either 40 or 60 over for the cylinders

If it used to pull strongly at lower engine speeds, and will still do so if you raise the engine rpm, I would first make sure that the governor is working properly.

Before you fret too much about an engine rebuild, see what your compression numbers look like, both dry and wet. That will tell you a lot.

Bore and sleve back to std is another option, might then be possible to re-use existing pistons with std rings.
