clutch troubles
I have A 49 cub and just replaced the clutch pp and throwout bearing. When I reassembled it the throw out was not close to the fingers so I adjusted the fingers out but still can`t get the clutch to disengage enough so not to grind when shifting. the finger adjusting screws are in as far as I dare put them (flush with the end of the nut)and the throw out bearing is adjusted so it is in contact with the fingers. but still grinds shifting.I am lost need help

Re: clutch troubles
I was waiting for the "clutch experts" to answer this, but here goes anyway. Sounds like you have too much free travel in your clutch pedal which keeps the pedal from going far enough to release the clutch. Free travel should be 1 to 1 1/2". There is a bolt down at the base of the pedal that when loose will allow you to adjust the free travel. However, the fingers should not be touching the TOB with the pedal all of the way up. The first thing to do is re-adjust the fingers for around a 1/4" clearance. The three fingers should have the same clearance all the way around.
Now the others can give you the real advice about this.

Re: clutch troubles
As Bighoss points out it is a combination of correct finger adjustment and clutch linkage to achieve proper free play or travel on your clutch pedal.

Re: clutch troubles
Set the fingers, first, then set the clutch free play. The tips of the fingers should be 1 1/4 inches from the pressure plate.
The following picture courtesy of Winfield Dave shows where to take the measurement.
Once you have the fingers set properly, then set the clutch free play. There should be a 1/8 inch gap between the finger tips and the TOB. A clean paint stick is just the right thickness and makes a great tool for measuring.

Clutch needs to be bolted to the flywheel, when making these measurements and adjustments!

Re: clutch troubles
Thank's for adding the supplement, Ed.
I once had problems because I set the fingers before bolting it back up. Thought I was being so smart adjusting it on the bench, and had to re-set through the hand hole after all.
