Permatex Copper Spray-a-gasket

Postby Sailor » Wed Feb 04, 2015 1:24 pm

1. When applying the spray, is it okay to get some spray on the pistons/valves/cylinders ?

2. Before I put the head on, should I put a light coating of engine oil on top of the pistons/cylinders to help with the first start?

Thanks, Larry

I usually just hang the gasket on a wire and spray it. I don't spray the block or the head.

The old Indian copper coat (may be from Permatex) in a bottle with applicator brush worked great for me when I had my cub's engine rebuilt and I was reinstalling the head.

Did the initial head bolt torquing, let it run enough to get good and warmed up, then retorqued the head.

Haven't had a single problem since then with the head. Must have been good stuff. 8)

:Dito: I usually make sure the cylinder walls are oiled and turn it over a few time before installing the head.

That stuff works great. Sprayed both sides hung from a wire when installed the head on my Super A.

Copper spray coat works great. Follow directions on the can and spray the head gasket, not the engine block or cylinders. If you've already sprayed the block, I'd clean it off before reassembly. Light coat of engine oil on the cylinder walls and MAKE SURE you prime your oil pump via the small hole in the oil filter compartment PRIOR to cranking the motor.

You can use the search feature to find other threads about priming the oil pump.

Hope this helps.

Forgot to mention (not unusual for me) I also use the Copper Coat on manifold gaskets.

1. Spray gaskets only, got it.

2. Prime oil pump, got it.

Thanks, all.
