BIGHOSS'S First Whistlecut

Postby BIGHOSS » Tue Dec 02, 2014 1:03 pm

I used a short piece of 1.5" EMT to practice on. (Why? It was what I had on hand).

Drilled two .125 holes in side wall about half way down to form a radius, where the slit and formed edged meet.
Sawed a line from outside wall straight down to holes with .045 cutoff wheel.
Inserted a socket just under 1.5" dia. in short end to act as a mandrel.
Pounded the daylights (technical term) out of it on an anvil with two different size ball peen hammers and .750" dia brass punch.
Just kept working it until It took shape.

The EMT would make a good tailpipe extension if I could tighten it down to muffler tailpipe. I may saw some slots in long end in order to clamp it. EMT wall is thicker than muffler. Don't know if that would help or hurt the process.

Nice job Ron!

If you can't fix it with a hammer, you've got an electrical problem.

That should work fine, but shouldn't the side that is bent down be on the other end?

In looking at it again it does look right. It depends on how you see it I reckon.

Fellas, it really doesn't matter in this case, i.e.
I used a short piece of 1.5" EMT to practice on. (Why? It was what I had on hand).

You are right, I only mentioned it in case he did the same to a muffler and it was wrong on the practice piece. But since it does look different depending how you look at it there is no concern

Depends on which end of the pipe the muffler is on if it is correct. :-). Good job!
