Silicon Gasket Material

Postby Sailor » Wed Nov 05, 2014 10:05 am

Last spring I installed new gaskets in the oil pan and final drives, all gaskets seeped oil. I am now in the process of replacing all my gaskets/seals during my restoration and would like to know if I should be using RTV in addition to new gaskets.

Thanks, Larry

Larry I always use RTV on gaskets and recommend to everyone to use it, you can never go wrong using it that is for sure as long as you do not put too much on.

Normally they do not require any sealer. Make sure the lips of al the pans are straight, they sometimes become bulged around the bolts if they have been overtightened. If I do have a gasket with a leaking problem, I spread a VERY thin layer of silicone on each side of the gasket before installing, and when using a cork gasket, just tighten to the point you see the gasket stat to bulge a tiny bit, do not torque a cork gasket to the specs listed in the charts, those torque values or for fastening metal parts together, not sealing a cork gasket.
If you are not part of the solution,
you are part of the problem!!!

I'll check the oil pan and the final pans for any distortion around the bolt holes. I agree, a thin coat of RTV can't hurt.

Thanks guys.

I eliminated the cork gaskets on the final's pans. I used black RTV, which is used to seal differential cover plates.
I have an excuse. CRS.

I read on the Permatex site were they have a specific material for differentials and transfer cases, would you recommend using the Ultra Black for all applications?

I don't know about all applications. Just have to read the usage directions on the product. For the crankcase oil pan, I would use the cork gasket with some sealant.

I have used the black RTV on finals oil pans and cars differentials cover plates with great success. I used the black RTV on my 154's finals because the finals are set at 90 degrees off of vertical and I didn't want a gear oil leak.

Well if the Black works on your finials it should work on the PTO also.
Thanks, again.

I have several different types of RTV tubes in the storage shelves. For many applications RTV works better than "gasket material" and is less expensive.

The big thing with RTV is that you have to follow directions and make sure the mating surfaces are clean.
