I have a 48 with cut out reg, w/distributor, 6volt. I have rewired this cub with a new harness. It ran before I put the new harness on. It turns over but wont fire. I used the wiring diagram that is on the site #3 on the page. I have had 4 people look to see if I wired this tractor correct I have. I have checked the switch to see if it working it does. I have power to the starter then to the gauge on one side but not on the other side. Could the gauge be bad or is it ground problem? I took a condenser out of a running cub & put it in this cub still wont start. What could be wrong?
Thanks

Re: Still wont start
I suggest bypassing the ammeter ,run a wire from hot on starter to coil . I believe you have an open circuit in the ammeter, happened to me recently on a friend' s J D .

Re: Still wont start
Jeff, over the years, I've encountered several "open" ammeters. Current on one side and not the other, tells the story.

Re: Still wont start
Take a test wire direct from batt. to coil, try starting it that way,--- and work your way back from there.---when you hit the no-start area that will narrow down the the problem, but I too would agree on the meter being bad! thanks; sonny

Re: Still wont start
Assuming you are wired according to this diagram, and only have power on the battery side of the ammeter, and it is NOT pegged, either you have an open ammeter, or one of the wires is not making good connection at the ammeter. Remember, there are insulators between the ammeter posts and the bracket. Could one of them be holding the wire off the post. Of course with no power on the rights side you do not have power to the ignition switch and coilJeff Silvey wrote:.......I have power to the starter then to the gauge on one side but not on the other side......
If you are not part of the solution,
you are part of the problem!!!

Thanks John I don't have a mag. Got a distributor. That page says #4. My page says #3 for a distributor. At least your helping.
I have a question for others which side of the coil - or + ? Can you just connect the two wire together from the ammeter after you take them off? I just checked to see if the needle moves when I pull the switch on the on/off switch it does not move. I took the bracket on the gauge its rusted real bad. So Ill keep working on it. Thanks Eugene ill try that.

Re: Still wont start
Some or most coils are marked. If not marked, doesn't make a difference. Reason some coils do not make a difference is how the secondary winding inside the coil is grounded.I have a question for others which side of the coil - or + ?
Yes.Can you just connect the two wire together from the ammeter after you take them off?
I have an excuse. CRS.

Re: Still wont start
Jeff if you have 6 volt positive ground , the positive side of the coil will go to the Distributor

Well got a call from a brother ff to talk shop today. After we talked we went to my problem. He guided me through several ways to solve the problem. It came out it was the ignition switch. It started. Like to thank everyone for their help. FF was Steve B thanks Brother. Be Safe.
