Re: Throw out bearing
It's threaded. There is a weep hole on the top to let you know when enough grease (use cheap, low temp grease) has been pumped in.

Re: Throw out bearing
UNLESS, the TOB is upside down with the weep hole at the bottom and the grease fitting at the top--hopefully that is NOT the case. You might be able to rotate the TOB via the hand hole and avoid a split.
Again, hope that is NOT the situation.

Re: Throw out bearing
If the bearing is upside down it can be rotated without splitting, but it is not easy. An alternative is to get a grease injector, and just go ahead and grease it through the hole.
$12.99 at NAPA. Most auto parts stores carry them. Note, this is not the needle type, but has a sturdy tip to push the check ball back in a fitting if needed. Also works great if you happen to have one of the early style throwout hanger assemblies that blocks access to the fitting.

John, how can you rotate the TO bearing, without splitting the tractor? It has a drive shaft going through the hole.

Re: Throw out bearing
Remove the bolt that holds the bottom of the hanger together. If it has a little wear you may be able to spread it enough and twist one side forward and the other back to get the ears out of the brackets, then simply rotate the bearing around the shaft so the fitting is down, then the fun of reinstalling begins. If you cannot get it apart that way you will need to pull the hanger rod out that holds the hanger at the top of the housing. The difficult part is putting it all back. If you have a good place to work and the stand, tools, etc. it is probably easier and quicker to split it.ScottyD'sdad wrote:.....

As a side note, the injector I posted earlier may not work well if the bearing is upside down with the fitting on top since there will be no vent to allow the old wax out of the housing.

You need "girly fingers":, not mine, to do that! Or, a mechanically minded 4 year old! That.s a laproscopic surgical procedure.

Re: Throw out bearing
also a messy one with the grease film and carbon dust that gets thrown around inside that bell housing. My hands are pretty good sized, and I have done it, but it would be a problem since I have started developing arthritis.ScottyD'sdad wrote:......That.s a laproscopic surgical procedure.Ed

Re: Throw out bearing
mine was upside-down when i got it, and it was obviously not greased in years and was beginning to fall apart. had to split and replace. wasn't too hard. good luck!
