What makes it do this?

Postby JG Strickland » Wed Sep 03, 2014 7:30 pm

Hello, I have a 1948 Cub that does not want to start sometimes and the other times start. I thought about the gas and cleaned the fuel bowl and tank drain. I also cleaned the screw on the bottom of the carb. Good fuel flow through the carb. Once it does start it will run like it should, but after cutting it off and trying to restart it I run the battery down with no start. While it is running I open the choke. To start I close it. Should I even have to choke it after it has been running a while? It does not always start every time.

Please help I am lost.

Starting probems with an engine after it is warm/hot but no problems starting when cold sometimes indicates a weak coil. If you have a mag ignition, the magnets might be weak.

I do have a mag ignition. How do I correct my problem? And it will sometimes not want to start when cold.

Are you using a 6 volt battery or 12 volt?

If you have an "old time" auto electrical repair shop available they might be able to test the magnet for you and rebuild it. This is assuming that it still is running on the mag and 6v system. If it has been changed over to a external coil, you can substitue a known good coil of the correct voltage. There are a lot of unknowns here that will determine what needs to be done. Other options are a cubfest or minifest with other cubbers if someone is in your area. There are still people on this and other forums that a rebuild mag. Steve at B & B on the Allis Chalmers forum comes to mind. You just have to find the right person.
Edit: I overlooked that you are on 6 volts. Sorry!

How old are your plugs? I had symptoms like yours early on with my Eddie, and new plugs were the solution. I would also recommend a complete tune-up (cap, rotor, points and condensor).

Thanks, guys! I finally got it running. I found out that the points were way out of range. Cleaned and reset the points plugs and tightened the wires. It cranks well and starts after the engine gets hot. :D

Also pull the air breather hose off and check the choke butterfly is not hooked up backwards. The lever night be fliped over at the rod..
