temperature gauge
so the previous owner put a temperature gauge in the dash. its been in the tractor since i have owned it, it is and always has been non-functional. is there a way to make this gauge functional? i really dont think it ever worked. there doesnt seem to be a place to install a temp probe. im kind of sick of having a non-working gauge in the dash, yeah it takes up a hole which is why i have not removed it, if i could have i working temp gauge i dont see that as a bad thing. i know these are a thermosyphon type system but their still should be a place on the block or head that you could get an accurate reading. has anyone installed a working temp gauge in a farmall cub?

Re: temperature gauge
I had mounted the fitting for the temperature probe on/in the upper outlet casting. Unfortunately I do not have any pictures to share right now. I had drilled the casting and threaded it for the fitting and then to be certain I had the fitting welded in place (I was not confident with the amount of thread). This is one of the "better" locations to install the temperature probe as it will read the temperature of the coolant as it comes out of the engine and before the radiator.
I have seen some that are mounted in the lower return casting, as there is a nice boss that you can easily drill and tap. This location will read the coolant temperature after comes out of the radiator, already "cooled-off" after going through the radiator. If you want to put a temperature gauge at both points you can judge the cooling efficency of your radiator.

Where you are, right now, is of absolutly no use unless you are able to get away from it, FAST!

Re: temperature gauge
An alternative is to mount an oil pressure gauge there. Just remember when buying that a cub only runs 35psi at maximum, so purchase an appropriate gauge.

Re: temperature gauge
cant you "remote mount" the factory gauge with a couple of fittings and some tubing?

It's little. Maybe like 1/8" copper tubing? We have a Cub project at school, I can look as it's had its oil gauge moved to the dash.
I wouldn't worry about a temp gauge. If it starts to run warm, you'll know it.
