FatDan's money pit.

Postby FatDan » Wed Aug 27, 2014 4:23 pm

Hi. Just wanted to say hi to everybody. I traded for a '48 Cub, and I found out how neglected it was. It seems everything is either worn out or broken . I've been observing the site for quite a while before registering. So far I've found all the information I needed in the arcives. I like to keep a low profile, So I don't like to ask a lot of questions unless I can't find the answer elsewhere. I'll try not to brother the forum anymore than I have too/ Glad to be here, and I've learned a lot so far. FatDan

We like to be bothered. It gives us a reason to be here.

Welcome to the group.
There are two ways to get enough Cubs. One is to continue to accumulate more and more. The other is to desire less.

Welcome FatDan! I think most of us have had a money pit at one time. When you get the Cub up and running again it's worth every penny spent...Reading the post and taking other members advice has saved me several dollars...JRICK

Don't feel alone. My first cub was a reasonable price, and included several implements, but was not running. On the cub itself, the only thing that did not need work other than seals was the transmission and finals, and they needed seals all around. The generator was bad, the starter was bad, the magneto was bad, the brakes didn't work, you could almost see the air looking at the cracks in the rear tires, and the engine was so worn I had to replace it. That was approximately 30 years ago, and about 3 years ago I refurbished it the 2nd time. Yes, my cubs still work for a living, though not as hard a work as they were originally built for, which was farming up to 40 acres.
If you are not part of the solution,
you are part of the problem!!!

Been thinking about this topic for a while, specially the money pit portion.

If you are expecting to get your money back or make a profit on your time, maintenance, and parts in a Cub. Not going to happen. In my case and I suspect most others, not any where close to what the tractor would bring at auction.

In my Cub's case, how do I put a value on 15 years of mowing, trailer work, and occasional garden tilling.

There are many ways at looking at this topic. Despite the investment, return has to be considered.
I have an excuse. CRS.

Dan:

G'day and Welcome to the Cub family. We like to hear how our new members are progressing with their cubs .. not just the problems but the solutions as well that you might come up with as you go through the Cub. Good thing Cubs are kinda small - keeps the money pit from getting too big :-)
