I may have overfilled my differential

Hello. I am new to the Farmall scene. A few months ago I bought a 1955 Farmall Cub with a Woods three-blade deck. I noticed that the rear axle on the left hand side was leaking a bit. I put some gear oil in it today and I may have over filled it. After mowing the lawn, the brakes would not work. then I noticed a yellow / tan fluid coming out of both sides of the axle. What have I done? How can I undo it? Any advice would be grand.

A-ha. After reading a few threads AFTER I posed the questions, I found my answer. I didn't just over fill it, I WAY over filled it. Will ye brakes dry out or will the need to be replaced?

Sounds like a drain and flush of the transmission is in order. Under the transmission on the front edge is the drain plug. On the left side of the transmission is the level check plug. Drain old oil out and refill with new gear oil until it runs out the check plug. Drive it around using all gears and repeat the drain and refill. If the brake bands are soaked in oil you will most likely have to remove them to clean them or depending on how worn they are put new bands on.

The brake bands will need to be removed to clean them. Soaking them in solvent and then burning them off with a torch will be your best bet. You'll probably be amazed at how well your brakes work after a good cleaning like that. Well, they'll work good going forward anyway....

Thanks for posting that link David. Thats a very good "How To" thread. Now I know why I don't want to fix my own brakes. Too many heavy parts to drop on my foot.

First key is to WEDGE the front axle to the bolster before you jack up the rear of the tractor to remove finals and replace brakes. The cub gets really tippy when the rear wheels are off the ground and the wheels start to get removed...

Diff fluid changed. Brakes will have to wait for another day.
