Oil and smoking
I know I'm asking for it, but I have to ask. I just changed the oil in my cub last weekend since having acquired it about a month ago. Forgive what I have done, but I had some various grades of oil leftover and I used those in the oil change. They ranged from 5W-20 to 15W40. After the oil change, the engine began burning oil. It hadn't done that before. I changed the oil again today with 30 weight oil and the smoke is better, but the cub is still smoking. My conclusion is that the lighter oil slipped past the rings and is burning. I'm guessing that once that has cleared it will stop smoking?

Re: Oil and smoking
I changed oil in one of my cubs last fall. The oil that came out was thick and dirty. I used shell rotella 15 - 40. the engine started to smoke really bad shortly after. It was to the point I couldnt stand it anymore. I removed the cylinder head to find oil soaked pistons. I then removed the pistons to find the rings were totally worn out. Also found ring gaps to not be stagered properly. Probably due to the rings being so worn out they were slowly rotating them selves on the pistons. No cylinder wear. Honed the cylinders and a new set of std rings and no more smoke.

Re: Oil and smoking
Hubhut, IMHO, mixing the oil was not the problem. I think the problem was the previous owner(s) had run non detergent oil. and the detergent oil you used cleaned some sludge, etc. our of the rings, etc., maybe even loosened up some carbon that moved around and may be now causing them to stick. If it were mine I would dump half a can of Sea Foam in the oil, and the other half in the gas and work it hard a couple hours, mowing or plowing, etc., something to actually make it work, then change the filter and replace the oil with 15w40 or 10w30, or straight 30w, whichever you have/prefer. May not do any good, but the alternative is a tear down and overhaul, which will cost several hundred $$$.
If you are not part of the solution,
you are part of the problem!!!

Re: Oil and smoking
When I do an oil change I usually also change out the oil bath air cleaner with fresh oil. Perhaps you put some of your light weight oil in it. I think it says somewhere in the op manual that light weight oil in there can get sucked up and burned. Just a suggestion.

Re: Oil and smoking
I would guess that as John said you kinda cleaned a lot of gunk out of the engine….On my 53 this happened to me….I know a lot of people don't like additives but I used " No Smoke" (Walmart) per the directions and it cleared up the smoking…I'm sure it only thickens the oil, but its 2 years now and I don't have any issues with the tractor…I use it for spraying and it has a snow blade on it that doesn't get much use except for grading chores... …..I'd start with John's suggestion and then determine how you want to approach the matter….Good oil pressure??? and check the compression and maybe a vacuum test wouldn't hurt…Just my 2 cents… ..Dave

You're fine. Use whatever you use in the crankcase for the air cleaner.

Re: Oil and smoking
Thank you for all the suggestions. I will try all of them. I changed the oil back to 30 weight and it smoked less. I'm going to add some seafoam and run it hard. I'll also try the no smoke from wally world. Tractor runs great--that's the odd thing. Oil pressure is good too. Like they say...if it ain't broke, don't fix it!
