Fixing up disc harrow

Postby weslypype » Fri Aug 22, 2014 4:57 pm

Uploaded some photos of a my disc harrow which has an arm that is starting to degrade and rust out pretty badly.

https://plus.google.com/photos/10382476 ... 2158971361

One of the photos shows that it's hanging on by just a thread.

Anyone have any advice on a quick and functional fix on this? I was thinking even a couple sheets of metal bolted on either side of the current arm might at least give some more life?

I would remove the entire bar, from both sides. Measure up, and visit a local industrial supply and purchase two new ones cut to length. Not seeing the bottom of the bar, thinking you will only need to drill two holes in each bar.

Consider straightening up the attaching bar and then using shorter bolts to connect the two bars.

Depending on what metal is in the scrap pile, cut the original back to solid steel. Clean up, then weld in a new section.
I have an excuse. CRS.

The bottom of the bar has an eye welded to it.

Yeah, as Don mentioned, the bottom has an eye. Kinda makes removal a bit more difficult

I'm not positive, I need to check out the underside and find out what's hiding beneath there

Looks like it may be a u-bolt.

for a quick fix i'd just clean up the top and hit it with the welder to build up the material then grind it flat and re-drill the hole. if you don't have a welder handy you could hack it off and make new lift bars with bar steel. i'd measure, cut, drill a hole at each end, then use a clevis with a pin to attach to the bottom. not gonna look original but it'll work for a while. the originals are probably hardened though so anything you make is gonna wear out a lot quicker.

on a side note, that mower in the other pics is AWESOME! never seen one like that. I'm not a fan taking off and on the big old belly mounted thing. I thought the only option for a rear mounted mower was the flail but I stand corrected!
