Transmission noise

Postby Astrowing » Mon Aug 18, 2014 8:44 pm

Got my 57 back together last weekend. The source of the noise was the countershaft front bearing. The race was missing and the balls just stayed together on one side. 1st/reverse fork was also broken but didn't contribute to noise. It is nice and quiet now. Also replaced seals in transmission and finals. Brakes were a challenge but thanks to pics on other postings I figured it out. It sure stops nice with clean brakes. Those old greasy ones don't work so good!

Have a question...did you reline the brakes, or replace the whole brake band/liner assembly, or clean the linings? The reason I ask is that at the DSCF is where I learned how to "clean" the brake linings. You burn the oil/grease off with a propane torch. It takes a while to burn it all out, but works great. If you actually replaced the whole assembly and saved the old ones, you might be able to clean up the old greasy ones, assuming the linings themselves aren't worn out, and save them for spares.
