Hey guys. You have been incredibly helpful in the past, and I'm stuck again, so here I am.
I have a 1950 Cub that has been converted to 12v, and the starter isn't turning the engine over anymore. It just does a rapid grinding sound (different from it not engaging the ring gear - that's been a problem, but this is a different sound, and the ring gear has already been replaced with no change). I took the starter apart, and this is what I found: (starter gear was removed for picture - no, it didn't vaporize. That would be much easier to diagnose)

It looks like that stopper that threads onto the end of the starter shaft has it's threads all stripped out. My guess is that under load the stopper is push out of the way enough for the starter gear to skip off the end of the bendix threads and that's the sound I'm hearing. I'm not sure why there would be enough play for it to go anywhere, but that's currently my best guess.
So here is my question: How do I fix this? I don't think I can find just that part so I'm assuming a rebuild is needed, but I don't know if I have to find a certain old tractor shop to do it, or if these are pretty standard and any place can do them.
Since it's 12v, I know something other than the original, and I can't find any numbers on it other than "130" stamped on the front bell part that sticks into the bell housing.

Hi Scott,
It looks to me that your bendix/starter drive came undone/stripped. All you need is a new one for a 50 Cub. Your starter is more than likely the original 6 volt unit, I'd bet almost bet on it.
Edit - Here's an Ebay listing for them http://www.ebay.com/itm/like/130637609621?lpid=82

Wow. That was much simpler than I thought. Thanks!
Is this pretty easy to put back in myself?

I just went back out and looked at mine, and the part you linked looks perfect. Is the same starter still used for 12v?
It looks like the bendix assembly shown is hollow. How does it attach to the inner shaft? I pulled a little and nothing popped out easy.

Yes - it's pretty straight forward. Here's another link to Rudi's manuals (above) Blue Ribbon manuals to things electric(testing and servicing) page 56 - bendix - http://www.cleancomputes.com/Cub/Blue%2 ... ipment.htm It doesn't tell you how to replace it but shows basically what's involved.

Re: 12v Starter needs help - not sure where to start
The windings and armature are different between the 6 and 12 volt starters.
Couple of thoughts. Take the starter to a repair shop and have them go through the starter - basically wind up with a new starter.
2nd thought is to completely go through the starter yourself. New bushings, over running clutch, commutator clean up, new brushes.

I have an excuse. CRS.
