squeaky brakes
so my cub has some brake squeaking noises that subsides after i have been running it for a while. i have actually never removed the wheels from this tractor. what's the easiest way to do, i have wheel weights. do i leave the weights on the wheels and take the entire assembly off, wheel, weights and all? also re-install the entire assembly as one as well. im not sure how heavy these weights are but they dont look light.. also what do i have to do to gain access to the brakes? what can i expect to replace when i get it apart? should the brake hub and the band be replaced? does the dealer have these parts or should i look elsewhere?

Here is a post I made when replacing my brake lining (Now in the HOW TO section). There are two different style brakes, but the process applies to both.
You do need at least an engine hoist, and a person to help wrestle things around would be very welcome. As you see, I removed the wheel and weight as an assembly. Just be careful to keep it upright and just lean it against something solid so you don't have to try to pick it up off the floor. If it does start to fall, don't get in its way!!
Be sure to replace the Differential Seal while in there (available at NAPA), as it is prone to leaking, especially if the transmission is overfilled. It was pointed out to me that removing the seal retainer is the easiest way to replace that seal, as there is also an o-ring that should be checked/replaced. I agree!

Re: squeaky brakes
i actually backed the brake off on the one side, the noise seems to have improved. im probably going to do what was done in that thread, but not now. im on vacation in sept and the tractor is on the list of things to work on. im also going to have the radiator repaired. there is a small crack where the cap goes in. crack in in the neck so i dont loose much coolant but it still needs to be repaired. radiator is otherwise in good shape so im questioning weather to repair or replace it. a local radiator shop will repair the radiator for $30. i think that will be a new neck. the fins and tank is in otherwise good shape. while i have the hood off im probably going to DA the hood and spray it with my HVLP gun. the hood and gas tank are both in excellent shape but the paint is starting to peal off. i dont really want it to turn into a rusted piece of junk so i think im going to pain it. this also involves getting a decal set. who has the best price of those??

It would be worth it to put it back together for the brake job.

Re: squeaky brakes
Squeaking is normal for band brakes. Don't worry about it if they work. You will spend more time and money, only to end up with brakes that STILL squeak when you're done.

Re: squeaky brakes
There is an inspection hole in the housing under the brakes. Clean out the junk and see if there is any lining left on the brake bands.
I have an excuse. CRS.

Re: squeaky brakes
its sure nice when they work in the winter when you are plowing snow. my brakes do work its just that there is no way to really check them without tearing it apart. i would rather damage other components like the brake drums because i neglected to change them
