Mowing Machine

Postby Harold R » Wed Jul 23, 2014 9:39 pm

Finally got the '69 up and running with a refreshed engine and the NOS fasthitch installed. It's a good fit for the Woods mower. Tractor runs great, and charges very well since the Hitachi wiring issue was resolved via the Delco 1 wire alternator. This is now my "go to" tractor since my '53 shed it's fast hitch and took up residence in Mississippi. 8)

Looks like a good combination, Harold. Maybe that rascal will sneak over the river one day too! :-)

So... I have a question about these RM mowers. Prior to our moving to our new house and my wife taking over the mowing duties of my uncle's field with Merlin, he used to mow it with a Kubota with a RM 59" mower on his three point. Quite frankly, the field looked like crap when he was done because the mower didn't float with the terrain and the tractor's movements. When the front would go into a low spot in the field, the mower would pop up in the back and leave sections with really long grass. Then, it would scalp in other sections. Scalping wasn't as bad as the tall grass.

Does the RM Woods on a FH float and ride on the ground when the tractor encounters odd terrain?

Without the stop collar tightened, the mower rides on the skids if the tractor sinks down through a ditch or a swell. I have mostly flat or gentle sloping terrain, so I haven't encountered any negatives with the mower. For me, it cuts as good as the belly version, plus the dust is all behind you. 8)

Thanks, Harold! I love my Woods 59 for my yard and the light field mowing on Merlin...Thanks Bill Hudson!!

Mostly, I just love the seat time. Of course, my wife is now stealing most of that seat time as she is about as addicted to tractors as I am!!

Neat looking setup Harold. I like it! That RM42 looks like it means business, the tractor too. Glad to hear you got the bugs worked out.

The squeaky wheel may get the grease but it's usually the first to be replaced!

Thanks. All that's left to do is fabricate a drive shaft for the mower deck. Time is about expired on the temporary fix. Hopefully it will last until we get some cooler weather.
